De spite the massive twin-tur bo engine an d horsepower, th anks to it s sophisticated aerodynamic package, the car can easily be d riven h ard withou t the risk of spi nning. The H uayra also set the fastest t ime on t he T op Gear T est Track in the hands of The St ig, 1:13.8, beating the previou s re cord , set by the Ariel Atom V8. New s: The Dacia Sandero is now on sa le in the UK. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black has been updated to produce extra horsepow er, but the handling is still challenging. Je remy claim s that he h as found a male equ ivalent version of Fifty Shades of Grey, presenting a kid's book about tractors. The new Chevrolet Stingray is announced. James May tur ned fifty the previous week. Als o, t he rally team composed of war amputees (p reviously me ntioned in ser ies 1 7, ep isode 6) finally comp leted the ir challenge of finishing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Revi ew: James reviews the new Bentle y Continental GT, a nd notes the new engine and subtle ride characteristics. Be liev ing that the Bentley, with four wheel driv e system an d a big, powerful engine, can handle thi ngs wo rse t han a Welsh co untryside road, James tak es the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally Champion ship, with Kris Meeke behind the whe el, and James being the co-d rive r. Despite the car ha ving less grip, mor e weight, an electro nic handbrake (unsuitable for usage on a rally stage) and James not being prof icient at givin g pace not es, the Be ntley was actually faster t han one of the full WRC c ars. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: Da mian Lewis take s his tu rn in the car, and drifts the Kia Cee 'd around the snow-coated test tra ck an d crosse s the fini sh line sidew ays, sett ing the slow est ever t ime of 2:09.1. J eremy ch eers Damian up by making a se parate board for sno w (he justs put the time underneath and to the side of the fastest lap time on that boa rd) and says that h e is the fastest driver ever on their "snow board ". Challenge: Jeremy attempt s to build a car s maller than t he Peel P50, naming his creation the P45. It wa s based on a qu ad bi ke, with bodywork fitted, designe d to wrap around the driver. He the n presented his idea to the 'Dragons' i n a Dr agons' Den style for mat. All of the d ragons decla re them selves "out" and back in the stu dio, Richard con cludes that for the P45 to be put in p roduction , Jerem y wou ld h ave to be dead. 149 Series 19 , Episode 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleetwood Challenge, Part 1: In an other chall enge, the presenters picked three super cars to take on an epic race. Si nce it was Hammond& #39; s turn to s elect the challenge location, the team wen t to the Western Uni ted States. Jeremy selected the Lexus L FA, Jame s chose the new Aston Marti n Vanquish, and Richa rd took the SRT Viper. After a brief drive in the Nevada de sert, the tr io head ed to Las Ve gas M otor Speedway , specifi cally the dra g strip, t o compete in drag races organized by the Las Vega s Police Department; whom organize d it with the the ory that allow ing people to drag race, legally, at a closed circuit, would preve nt street rac ing. De spit e the high pe rformance of their ca rs, the tr io were beate n by modified production cars, and 4WD cars, in each of their drag rac es. Ne ws: Jere my comes up with a solutio n on how to solv e the crisis affecting Britain 9;s town centre s: sacki ng all tr affic ward ens and re moving double yellow li nes. The t rio then rev iew a Chinese product de signed to stop drow siness behin d the wheel, before th ey took a first look at the 2 013 Jaguar F-Type . Th ey prais ed its styling, but cr iticized its high price tag of £60,000, as well as its target aud ience. James mentions Peugeot Citroen's car intended to run on compresse d air; Jeremy attempted to use a fire extinguisher to demonstrate, but fa iled a fter only causing him self to turn slowl y around. Challenge, Part 2.: After leaving La s Vegas, James and R ichard make fun o f Jeremy';s LFA for lacking not o nly B luetoo th conn ection and iPod connectors, but cup holder s, despite being the most expensive car. They are then tasked to head to Willow Spr ings International Moto rsports Park , but they instead stop on a grooved road, where each ca r drives over the grooves and produces notes. W hen they reach Will ow Sp rings , they are forced to pl ay an aerial version of Laser Quest, where the y would drive 5 laps around the track, whilst being chased by two Aermacch i SF.260 armed wit h laser guns. In the end, James won the challenge by be ing hit only 17 times. St ar in a Reasonably Pric ed Car: Fl eetwoo d Mac& #39;s Mick Fleetwood drov e the Kia Cee'd ar ound the Tes t Track with a lap of 1 :45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Springs, the group head ed for Lo s Angele s, California. In order to do "real wo rld" testing, Ric hard devised a challenge to see who could burn the be st elevens. The three instead ended up drawing a phallus and left LA. The te am then stay ed for a night in Palm S pring s. However, the producers gave them a fi nal challenge. The three would drive from Palm Springs t o the Mexican border at Ca lexico the following mor ning, and the la st to make it to th e Mex ican border would have to travel into the co untry itself to drive th e Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sp orts car made fun o f by t he prese nters i n an ea rlier series , for a late r segme nt on the show . In revenge for taking them to Am erica, Jerem y and Ja mes sabo tage d Ham mond' s Viper , causing h im to lose 10 minutes i n the race. Despite making a stop for fue l, Jeremy made it to the finish line first, with Jame s in secon d. Ri chard then walked to the borde r being the last perso n to arrive. At the st udio, James and Jere my end by saying that t he Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LFA were amazi ng. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Ma cdonald Re view: Je remy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Su baru BRZ. Th e cars are almost i dentical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyo ta GT86. The Stig then completed a la p of the Test Track in 1 :31:3. News: They discu ss t he n ew Subaru Im preza, whi ch is not coming to UK, and they then talk abo ut the new Mas erati Quattr oporte . Chal lenge, Part 1: The producers have reserved a s ingle ticket to a football ma tch at th e San Sir o in Milan, Nort hern Ital y. The tri o have a race from Wemble y Stad ium to the San Si ro. Jeremy dr ives the She lby M ustang GT500 and R ichar d and James trav el on public transpor t. Simila r to the previ ous race to Mont e Carlo, Ric hard and James are n ot allowed to use any cars , and Jere my is not allowed to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since the last epic race, the trains have become fas ter and boats have become slower. Rich ard and Ja mes opened up a big lead whi lst trave lling on the Eurosta r, and arrive in P aris while Jeremy was still crossin g the English Channel on a ferry. After reach ing France , Jeremy disc overs that the Mustang only hold s 50 litres in its fuel tank. Aft er leavi ng Paris, Richard and James discuss what to do upon arri ving in Milan — as there are two of them but o nly one ticket. Hundreds of mile s behind, Jeremy ends part 1 o f the challeng e stating out loud, "I39;m gonna lose !" Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Am y Macdonald dr ove the Kia Cee'd arou nd the Test Track in 1:44.4. During on e of her p ractice runs, Amy acciden tally destroy ed one of the runway lights, w hich Jeremy give s to her af ter revealin g the lap time. Chal lenge, Part 2: The high speed TGV s lowed down as it approached the mountains that surround Northern Italy. Jeremy b egan to catch up and was nearly n eck and ne ck with the train, until road works at the Mont Bl anc Tunnel slow him down. Th e train sta rts to accelera te aga in and r eaches Norther n Italy ahea d of Jer emy. Richard and James use a t ube network to get to the streets near the finish line. James maintains his oppositi on t o ru n on telev ision and Rich ard runs off alone to f ind the finish line, which is at a bar in the I M Vil la Veuve Cliequot. J ames then assembled a bike which he h ad hidde n in one o f his bags and ri des t o the bar, only to find that Rich ard is already th ere and has won the race and the ticket to the f ootball match. Moments later, Jeremy arri ved and acce pted defeat for the first time ever in an e pic race of all the series. 151 Se ries 19 , Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilt on Review: Jeremy reviews the V auxhall A stra VXR , Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane Renault Spor t Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, th e Focus be ing the slo west at 1:2 9.6, the Ast ra VXR a t 1:28.3, an d the Megane in 1:27.7. De spite this, Jeremy chose the Astr a VXR as the best overall car of th e thre e. News: They discuss the newest cars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation F ord Mu stang woul d be sold in Great Bri tain, but the UK version would c ome w ith a 2.0 Eco Boost engine, and the importa nce of the handbrake turn in "male deve lopment". R eview: Jeremy tests the all new Ki a Cee 9;d, putting it through a myriad of strange road tests. S tar in a Rea sonably Pric ed Car: Lewis Hamil ton opens up about his move from Mc Laren to Mer cedes AMG and takes the old Suzuki Liana a round the Test Track, set ting the fastest F1 time, a 1:42.9 . Review : As punishment for losing the previous race, R ichard is forced to review the Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, he s tates that the MXT was an ambiti ous undertaking for the first-time manufacturer, but that it had its share of flaws. Jeremy' ;s team wins . 152 Series 19, Episode 5 2 4 Februar y 2013 James McAvoy C hallenge, Pa rt 1: Jer emy and Richard at tempt to des ign a car targeted at elderly people. Jeremy demonstr ates the complexity of mo dern cars 39; dshb oard. Richard brings a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jere my breaks the d ashboar d and replaces it consid ering it to be too complicated for elders. Richard asks for the airbags sayi ng tha t it is dangerous fo r th e eld erly who ar e as delicate as childr en, and that he nee ds it for a safety featur e. J eremy makes a speedometer which reads 20 mph at the to p speed, he also uses an old design switch f or rear fog ligh t which does noth ing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and r eplac es the back seat with high sea t chairs an d the Fia t bad ge with a R over one. They paint it in beige after o bserving the shade of a heari ng aid. Richard uses w ater-resist ant fa bric as seat covers , and while stitching hurts his eye. They complete th e car and end the part 1 with R ichard wearing heavy bandages over his le ft e ye. News: Volkswage n will launch GTI version of the new Golf and GT ve rsion of Up will be launc hed. Kia wil l lau nch t he Pro Cee'd GT . The Mini Pacema n is laun ched, and the trio mock the front end of the car, claiming tha t it looks depressi ng. The trio agree that the B ritish are the best drivers. Alfa-Rom eo releases photographs of the Gloria, in which the trio make fun of it' s name. Richa rd had arr ived late so James and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of editing). Review: Jame s revi ews the new Ra nge Rover in London. The new ca r is completely redesigned, 400 kg lighter due to Al uminium body, has active suspension, new gearbo x, minimali st d ashboard a nd offers better comfort. James then race s it against TerraMax at Ne vada Automotive Test Ce ntre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 10 m ile acros s, pa ssing t hrough rocky terrain, hillock, mud, rive r and s and-tracks. T erraMax was switched to drone mode during the race to deflate the tyres and take a shor t-cut. The Range Rover's aut omatic Terrain Respons e Syst em is demonstrate d. James ta kes a longer route to as cend the hill but still wins the ra ce. At the studio, the trio cons ider the driverless cars to be not very pract ical. He drove o ver grass y patch in the la st corner but manages to keep the car under control. Ch allenge, Part 2: Jeremy an d Richard road-test their car at C hristchurch, Dorset. The car has large front bum pers made up of foam, large rear-view mirror s, squeakin g ball under the brake- pedal, large magnif ying-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Ric hard Bri ers) with only f our destinatons. The car ha s an artificial c at on the roof which later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richar d later shows his system to fin d the l ocation o f parked car (the car activates a flare and then release s a balloon). Jeremy shows that the radio o nly play s Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, which both later find to be irresistible to cla p alo ng. The name of th e car is re vealed to be The James. They pick up t hree el derly ladies from a pensioners' home for road-testing and drive them to a bow ling club where i t is shown that Richar d fitted the airb ag at the rear f or p arking assist which i nflat es the airb ag on close proximity. Jeremy and Rich ard buy food f or picnic , choos ing only British foods . They attach the s hoppin g trolley to Tow hitch and head for picni c. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Ric hard end up choosing a picnic spot on roadsi de whe re they find the tr olley to be damaged dur ing reve rsing and the food to be soaked, however they at e the f ood which was not ruine d. Th e next day b oth lea ve Christchurch and Jer emy shows h is system to prev ent the car from being driven on the wro ng side of the roa d, the car initially sounds alarm and later the tyres, d oors and oth er parts of the car ex plode whi ch sto ps the ca r and renders it i mmobile. At t he st udio, James cons iders the heat er to be complicated, the t rio thank Richard Briers an d anno unce the A frica special. 153 Se ries 19, Episode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest First of the two-episode Africa Sp ecial, taking place in Africa. The episo de was shot in 201 2. Chal lenge , Part 1 : Buy used estate cars for up to £ 1,500 in Brit ain and re port at a s mall village i n rural Uganda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and Jame s in a Volvo 850R Wa gon. The cha llen ge is to find the true sourc e of the river Nile. They set off an discover that exploring isn';t as difficult as first thou ght when th ey go on a nice eas y drive and f ind Lake Victoria, of whom the Victorian Explorers thought wa s the source of the Nile. Howe ver they are th en told that it is n ot the actual source of the Nile and there were two other dispu ted locations for it, one i n Rwanda and one in Burundi. Ho wever, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both of t hese locatio ns were wron g and decided to head west towards La ke Edwar d to see whether there was a link betw een that lake a nd Lake Ki vu in Rwanda. I n their journey west, wher e they vi sit the E ntebbe Airport and from there see th e Ford Sc orpio Est ate back-up car. T hey continu e into Kampala, Uganda 9;s Capital City where they get held u p in a traffic jam overni ght, t he most hurrendous traffic they39;d ever s een. They continue on well-maintained highways west findi ng their trip incr edibly easy before reaching the town of M barara in the s outhwes t of the c ountry, vi a a stop in J ezza, a village in Mpigi Dist rict. Her e they stay in a d isgusting h otel, after driving thro ugh tea pl antations in an attempt to discover a lovely teahouse hote l, which in th e mind of R ichard, was bound to found due to tea progra mmes he' d se en. In M barara they stay ed in the Econom ic Lodge with Jeremy having a b ed with faec es on it. The y left the hotel disguste d before Richard has the idea to make the cars 'ho tels9;. James modifies his Vo lvo by add ing a library, Richard ad ds a cooker and Jer emy ad ds a coffin. The c offin he uses to put his clothes in, h e slee ps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave for Lake Ed ward, camping ove rnight ther e because of its beau ty befo re heading in sea rch of the river heading for Lake Kivu. None of t he river s connect the lake as the y all head east rather than south. They give up, leaving t hem disappointed. Then Jer emy looks at a map and d iscovers the sou rce of th e Nile must be on the other side of L ake Vic toria. His reasoning is that th e Mediterr anean Sea i s effectively an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather tha n Alexan dria in Egypt. Afte r discov ering this they decide that they must drive stra ight to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to t he southeas t coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
