The car is capable of savage accelera tion, with a lo t of attention placed in to the bod ywork, in terior and utili zing cutt ing ed ge techno logy. Despite the massive twi n-turbo en gine and hor sepower, thanks to its sophisticated aerodynamic package , the car can easily b e dr iven hard without the risk o f spinni ng. The Huayra also set the fastest time on the Top Gear Test Track in the hands of The Stig, 1:1 3.8, beat ing the previous record, set by the Ariel At om V8. News: T he Dacia Sandero is now on sale in the UK. The Mercede s-Benz SLS AMG Black has been updated to produce extra horsepowe r, b ut the handling is s till ch allenging. Jeremy claims t hat he has foun d a mal e equivalent version o f Fifty Shades of Grey, presenting a ki d's book about tra ctors. The new Chevrolet Stingray is announc ed. James M ay turned fifty th e previous week. Als o, t he rally team co mposed of war amputee s (previously mentione d in se ries 17, episode 6) finally compl eted their challenge of finis hing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: James reviews the ne w Bentley C ontinent al GT, and notes the new engine and subtl e ride c haracteristics. Bel ieving that the Ben tley, with f our wheel drive system and a b ig, powerful en gine, can handle things worse than a Welsh cou ntryside roa d, James takes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rall y Championship, with Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and James being the co-driver. Despit e the car having less grip, mor e weight, a n el ectronic handbrake (unsuitable fo r usage on a rally stage) and James not being pro ficient at giving p ace notes, the Bentley was a ctua lly faster than one of the full WRC cars. Star In A Reason ably Priced Car: Damian Lewis takes his turn in t he car, and drifts the Kia C ee' d ar ound the snow-coated test track a nd crosses the finish line sid eways, setting t he slo west e ver time of 2:09.1. Jeremy che ers Damian up by making a separate board fo r snow (he justs put the time underneath and to the si de of the fas test lap time on that b oard) and says that he is the fas test d river ever on the ir &qu ot;snow board". Challenge: Jeremy at tempts t o bu ild a car smaller than the Peel P50, namin g his cre ation the P45 . It was based on a quad bike, with bodywork f itted, de signed to wrap around the driv er. He t hen presented his idea t o the ' Dragons 9; in a Dra gons39; Den style format. All of the dragons declare themselve s &q uot;out" and back in the studio, Richard conclud es that for the P4 5 to be put in production, Jere my w ould have to be dead. 149 Ser ies 19, Episode 2 3 Februa ry 2013 Mic k Fleetwood Chall enge, P art 1: In an other challeng e, the present ers pi cked three super cars to t ake on an epic race. Since it was Hammon d's turn to select the challenge l ocatio n, the tea m wen t to the W estern United States. Je remy selecte d the Lexus LFA , James chose the new Asto n Martin Van quish, and Richard took the SRT Viper. After a bri ef drive in the N evada desert, the t rio headed t o Las Vegas Motor Sp eedway, specifically t he drag strip, to com pete in drag rac es organized by the Las Vega s Police Departm ent; whom organized it w ith the theory that allowing people t o drag race, legally, at a clo sed circu it, w ould preve nt street racing. Despite the high per formance of their c ars, the trio were beaten by mo dified produc tion cars, and 4W D cars, in each of their drag races. News: Jeremy co mes up wit h a solution on how t o solve the crisis affec ting Britain's town centres: sacki ng all traffic wardens and removing do uble yellow lines . The trio then review a Chinese product designed to stop drowsiness behind the whe el, be fore they t ook a first look at the 2 013 Ja guar F-Type. They praised its styling, but criticized its high price tag of £60 ,000, as well as its targe t audience. Jame s mentions Peugeot C itroen' s car intended to run on com pressed air; Je remy attempted to use a fire ex tinguisher t o demonstrate, b ut failed after only causing himself to turn slowly around. Challenge, Part 2 .: After leaving L as Vega s, Jame s and Ri chard make fun of Jeremy 9;s LFA for lackin g not only Bluetooth con nectio n and iPod co nnectors, but cup holde rs, despite being the mo st expe nsive car. They are then task ed t o head to Willow Spr ings Internatio nal Motorspo rts Park, but they i nstead stop on a grooved road, where each car dr ives over the groov es a nd pr oduces notes. When they reach Will ow Springs , they a re fo rced to play an aerial versi on of Laser Qu est, where they would drive 5 laps around the track, whilst bein g chased by two A ermacchi SF.260 arm ed with laser guns. In the end , James won the challenge by being hit only 17 times. Sta r in a Reasonably Priced Car: Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood drove t he Kia Cee 'd around the Test Track with a lap of 1:45.4. Challe nge, Part 3: Departing W illow Spri ngs, the g roup headed for Los Ang eles, Californi a. In order to do &q uot;real world" testin g, Richard devised a challenge t o see who could burn the best e levens. The three instead ended up drawing a phallus a nd left L A. The team then stayed for a night i n Palm Springs. Howev er, the p roducers ga ve them a final cha llenge. The three would drive from Pal m Springs to the Mexican border at Cal exico the following morn ing, and the last to make it to the Mexica n border would have to travel into the co untry itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fu n of by the presenters in an earlier series , for a lat er segme nt on the show. In revenge for taking them to A merica, Jeremy and Ja mes sabotaged Hammond9;s Viper, causing him to lose 1 0 minutes in the rac e. Despit e making a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the fin ish li ne first, wi th James in second. Ric hard then walked to the borde r being the la st person to arriv e. At the studio, J ames and Jer emy end by saying that the Viper was awful and th at the Vanq uish and LFA were amazing . 150 Ser ies 19, Epi sode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Macdona ld Re view: Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT8 6 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars ar e alm ost identical, but Jeremy prefe rs the Toyota G T86. The S tig then completed a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3. Ne ws: They discuss the new Subaru Imp reza, which is not comin g to UK, and they then talk about the new Mase rati Quattroporte. Challenge, Part 1: The producers have reser ved a single ticket to a football match at the San Sir o in Milan, Northern I taly. The trio h ave a r ace from Wem bley Stadium to the San Siro. Jerem y driv es the Shelby Mustang GT500 a nd Richard and James travel on public trans port. Similar to the previ ous race to Monte Carlo, Richard and James are not allowe d to use any cars, and Je remy i s not allowed to use any train s. According to Jeremy, since the la st epic race, the trains have become faster and boats have bec ome slower. Richar d and James ope ned up a big lead w hilst travellin g on the Eurostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the English Channel on a ferry . After re aching France , Jeremy di scovers that the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel tan k. After leaving Par is, Ric hard and James dis cuss what t o do upon arri ving in Milan — as the re are two of them but onl y one ticket. Hundreds o f miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of t he challenge stating out loud, "I'm gonna lose!" St ar in a Reasonab ly Priced Car: Am y Macdonald drove the Kia Ce e'd arou nd the Test Track in 1:44.4. During one of her practice runs , Amy acci dental ly destroy ed one of the runway lights, which Jeremy gives to he r after revealing th e lap ti me. Challeng e, Part 2: The high sp eed TGV sl owed d own as it ap proached the mounta ins that sur round Northern I taly. Jeremy began to ca tch up and was nearly neck and neck with the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him do wn. The train starts to accelera te again and reac hes Northern Italy ahead of Je remy. Richard and James use a tube network to get to t he stre ets n ear the finish line. Jam es main tains his opposition to run on television and R ichard runs off alon e to find the finis h line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cliequot. James then a ssemble d a bike which h e had hi dden in one of hi s bags and r ides to the bar , only to find th at Richard is already ther e and has won the ra ce and the ticke t to the foo tball match. Moments later, Jeremy arrive d and accept ed d efeat for the first time ever in an epic race of al l the series. 151 Series 19, Epis ode 4 17 February 2013 Le wis Hamilton Review: J eremy reviews the V auxh all Astra VXR, Ford Fo cus ST and Renault Megan e Renault Sport C up. T he Stig did laps of e ach car, the Focus be ing the slowest at 1:29.6, the A stra VXR at 1:28 .3, and the M egane in 1:27 .7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the bes t overall car of the three. News: They discuss the newest c ars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford M ustang w ould be so ld in Gre at Bri tain, but the UK vers ion wo uld come wi th a 2.0 Eco Boost engine, and the importance of the handbrake turn in "male devel opment". Revie w: Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee 9;d, p utting it through a myr iad of strange road t ests. I nclud ing Matt LeBlanc d oing a lap with bo th the old and new Cee& #39;d , Bruce Willis ( in character as John McClane ) testing the horn o f the Cee 9;d, Eric Clapton testing it s auxili ary input jack , and Jeremy testing t he Cee';d's self parallel park ing f eature. Minding his words, he states that the MXT was an ambitious undert aking for the fir st-time man ufacture r, but t hat it had its sha re of flaws. Jeremy 9;s t eam wins. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 February 2 013 James M cAvoy Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richar d attem pt to desi gn a car targeted at elderly peo ple. Jeremy demonstrates the comp lexity of modern cars' dshboard. Richard brings a F iat Multipla and both mod ify it. Jeremy br eaks the d ashboard and repla ces it considering i t to be too complicated for elders. Richard asks for t he airbags saying that i t is dangerous for the elderly who are as del icate as chil dren, and that he needs it f or a safety fea ture. Jeremy makes a speed ometer which reads 20 mph at the top speed, he also uses an old d esign switch for rear fog ligh t which d oes nothing. Jerem y installs a pet-c age a nd replaces the back seat with high seat chairs and the Fia t badge w ith a Rover on e. They paint it in beige af ter observing the shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-r esistant fabric as s eat cover s, and while stitching hurts his eye. They complete the car a nd e nd the part 1 wit h Ri chard wea ring heavy bandages over his left e ye. News: Volkswagen wi ll launch GTI v ersion o f the new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and th e trio mock the front end o f the car, claimi ng that it looks depressing. The trio agree that the B ritish are the b est dr ivers. Alfa-Ro meo releases pho togra phs of the Gloria, in which the trio mak e fun of it's name. Richard had arri ved late so Jame s and Jeremy had attempted to play te nnis with car s (which has a lot of editing). Review: Jam es reviews the new Range Rover in Lo ndon. The new car is completely redesigned, 400 kg ligh ter due to Aluminium body, has active suspension, new gearbo x, minimalist dashb oard and off ers better comfort . Ja mes then races it ag ainst TerraMax at Neva da Automotive Te st Cent re, Nevada. The race wa s to a hill 10 mile a cross, passing th rough rocky terrain, hil lock, mud, ri ver and sand-track s. TerraMax w as switc hed to d rone mode during the race to deflate t he tyres and take a short-cut. The Range Rover9;s automatic Terrain Response System is demonstrated. James takes a longer route to ascend the hill but still wins the race. At the studio, the tr io consider the driver less cars to be not very prac tical. Star In A Reasonably Pr iced Car: James McAvoy drove the K ia Cee'd around the Test Track with a lap of 1:43.6 despit e having less experie nce of driving car s. He drove ove r grassy p atch in the last cor ner but manages to ke ep the car under c ontrol. Chal lenge, Part 2: Jeremy and Richard road- test their car at Christchurch, Dorset. The car ha s lar ge front bumpers made up o f foam, la rge rear-view mirrors, squeaking ball under the brake-ped al, large magn ifying-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Bri ers) wit h only four destinatons. The car h as an artificial ca t on the ro of which later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Rich ard later sh ows his system to find the loc ation of parked car (the car activates a flare and then releases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the rad io only pl ays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, which both lat er find to be irresistible to cl ap along. The name of t he car is revealed to be The Jam es. They pick up three elderly ladies from a p ensioners ' ; home fo r road-tes ting a nd drive t hem to a bowling club where it is sho wn that R ichard f itte d th e airbag at the rear for park ing assi st which inflates the airbag on close proxim ity. J eremy and Ric hard b uy food fo r picnic, choosing o nly British foods. They att ach t he shopping trolley to T ow hitch and head f or picnic. The roof of the car leak s as it rains. J eremy and Richard e nd up ch oosin g a picnic s pot on roadside where they f ind the tro lley to be damaged during reversing and the fo od to be soake d, howev er they ate the f ood w hich was no t ruined. The n ext day both leave Christchu rch and Jeremy sho ws his system to p revent the ca r from being driven on the wrong sid e of th e road, t he car initia lly sounds alarm and later the tyr es, doors a nd other parts of the car explode whic h stops the car a nd render s it immob ile. At the studio , James consi ders the heater to be complicat ed, the trio thank Richard Briers and announc e the Afr ica speci al. 153 Se ries 19, Episode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest F irst o f the two-ep isode Africa Specia l, taking pla ce in Africa. T he episode was s hot in 2012. Ch allen ge, Part 1: Buy us ed estate c ars for up t o £1,50 0 in Britain and report at a sma ll villag e in rura l Uganda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richa rd in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find th e true so urce of the river Nile. They set of f an discover that explorin g isn' ;t as dif ficult as fir st thought when they go on a nice easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the V ictorian Explo rers thought was the source of the Ni le. However they are then told that it is not the a ctua l source of the Nile and there were two o ther di sputed locations for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. How ever, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both o f th ese l ocations wer e wron g and d ecided to head west toward s Lake Ed ward to see whether there was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In t heir journey west, where they visit the Entebbe Airport and fro m there see the Fo rd Sc orpio Est ate back-up car. T hey continue into Kampala, Uganda 's Capital City where th ey get held up in a tr affic jam overnight, the most hurrendous traff ic they 9;d ever seen. The y continue on well-mai ntained highway s wes t find ing their tr ip incredibly easy before re aching the town of Mbarara i n the southwest of th e countr y, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi Dis trict. Here they stay in a disgusting h otel, after dr iving through tea planta tions in an atte mpt to discover a lovely t eahouse hotel, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due to tea prog rammes he 9;d seen. In Mb arara they s tayed in the Econ omic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed wi th faeces on it. They left the hotel dis gusted before Rich ard has the idea to make th e cars ' ;hotels'. James modi fies his V olvo by adding a librar y, Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. The coffin he uses to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotto n. They leave for Lake Edwar d, camping overnight th ere because of it s beauty before h eading in s earch of the river he ading for Lake Kivu. N one of the rivers connect the lake as t hey all head east rather than south. They give u p, leaving t hem disappointed. Then J eremy looks at a map an d discovers the source of the Nile must be on the other side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that the Med iterran ean Sea is e ffec tively an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather th an Alexan dria in Egyp t. After discovering this they d ecide tha t they must dr ive strai ght t o the other s ide of Lake Victoria to get to th e southeast coast in T anzania near the S erengeti.
