The Huayra als o set the fa stest ti me on the Top Gear Test Tra ck in the hands o f The Stig, 1:13.8, beating t he previous record, set by the Ariel Atom V8. News: The Dacia S andero i s now on sale in the UK. T he Mercedes- Benz SLS AMG Black has been updated t o produc e extra horsep ower, bu t the handling i s sti ll challenging. J eremy claims that he has found a male eq uivalent v ersion of F ifty S hade s of Grey, presenting a kid' ;s book about t ract ors. The new Chevrolet Stingray is announced. James May turned fifty the previous week. Also, the ra lly team composed of war amputees (previous ly mention ed in series 1 7, episode 6 ) finally completed t heir challe nge of fini shing the 2013 Dak ar Rally. Re view: James re view s the new Bentley Continental GT, and note s the new engine and subtle r ide characteristic s. B elieving that the Ben tley, w ith four wheel driv e system a nd a b ig, powerfu l engine, c an handle things worse than a W elsh country side road, Jam es takes t he car on to a Welsh stage of the World Rally Champi onship, with Kr is Meeke behind the wheel, and James being the co-dri ver. Despite the car having less grip, more weight, an electronic handbrake (unsuitable for u sage on a rally stag e) and James not being proficie nt at givi ng pace n otes, the Bentley was actu ally faste r than one of the fu ll WRC cars. Sta r In A Reasonably Pric ed Car: Dam ian Lewis takes his turn in the car , and drift s the Kia Cee' ;d around the snow-coat ed t est track a nd crosses the finish line sideways , setting th e slowest e ver ti me of 2: 09.1. Jeremy cheers Damian up b y ma king a separate bo ard for snow (he justs put the ti me un derne ath and to the side of the fastest lap t ime o n tha t board) and says that he is the fastest driver ever on their "snow boar d". Cha llenge: J eremy attempts to build a car smalle r than the Peel P50, n aming his crea tion the P45. It was based on a quad b ike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wrap around the dr iver. He then pre sented his idea to the 'Dragon s'; in a Dr agons& #39; Den style format. All of the dragons dec lare themse lves "out" and bac k in th e stud io, Richa rd con cludes th at for the P45 to be put in product ion, Jeremy wo uld have to be dead. 149 Series 19, Episode 2 3 February 201 3 Mick Fleetwood Challenge, Part 1: In a nother challenge, the presenters picked three super cars to take on an epic race. Since it was Hammond's turn to select the ch allenge location, the team went to the West ern Unit ed Stat es. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Asto n Martin Vanquish, and Richard took the SRT Viper. Af ter a brief drive in the Nevada dese rt, the tr io headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specifically the drag strip, to compete in d rag races organized by the Las Vegas Police Department; whom organized it with the theor y that allowing people to dr ag race, l egal ly, at a closed c ircuit, would pre vent stree t ra cing. D espite the hig h performance of t heir cars, t he trio wer e be aten by m odified producti on cars, and 4WD cars , in each of their d rag races. New s: Jeremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the c risi s affe cting Britain's to wn centres : sacking al l traffic wardens an d removing double ye llow lines. The t rio t hen review a Chines e product designed to stop drows iness behin d th e wh eel, b efore the y took a first l ook at th e 2013 Jaguar F-Typ e. The y prais ed its styli ng, but cri ticized its high price tag of £60,000 , as well as its target audience. James mentions Peuge ot Citro en's car intended to run on compressed air; Je remy attempted to use a fi re e xtinguisher to d emons trate, but failed after only causing himself to t urn slowly around. Ch allen ge, Part 2.: After l eaving Las Vegas, James a nd Richa rd make fun of Jer emy's LFA for lacking n ot only Bluetooth conn ection and iPod c onnector s, but cu p holders, d espit e being the most expensive car. They are th en ta sked to head to Willow Springs Int ernational Motorsports Pa rk, but th ey instead stop on a grooved road, where eac h car drives over the grooves and produc es notes. When they reach Wil low Springs, they ar e forced to play an aerial version of Laser Qu est, where they woul d driv e 5 laps aro und the tra ck, whi lst being ch ased by two Aermac chi SF.2 60 armed wi th laser g uns. In the end, J ames won the chal lenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Fl eetwoo d Mac's Mick F leetwood drove the Kia Ce e'd a roun d the Test Tra ck with a lap of 1:45.4. Ch allenge, Part 3: Departing Wil low Springs, the group headed for Los Angeles, California. In order to do &q uot;real world& quot; testi ng, Richard devised a challeng e to see who coul d burn the best el evens. The three i nstead ended up draw ing a phallus and left LA. The team then stayed f or a night i n Palm Springs. However, the pro ducers gave them a final cha llenge. The three would drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican bo rder at Calexico the following morning, and the las t to m ake it to the Mexican border would have to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mex ican sports ca r made fun o f by the presenters in an earlier series, for a later segment on the s how. In reve nge for taking them to Amer ica, Jer emy and James sabotaged Hammond 's Viper, causin g him to lose 10 minutes in the race . Despit e making a stop for fuel, Jere my made it to the finish line first, with James i n second. Richard th en walke d to the border being the last person to arrive. At the studio, Ja mes and Jeremy end by sayi ng that the Viper was awful an d that the Vanquish an d LFA were amazing. 15 0 Series 19 , Episode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Mac dona ld Rev iew: Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subar u BRZ. The cars ar e almost identical, bu t Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86 . The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3 . News: They dis cuss the new Subaru Imp reza, which is not comin g to UK, and t hey then talk about the new Maserati Quattro porte. Challe nge, Part 1: The producers have reserved a single ticket to a foot ball match a t the San Si ro in Milan, Northe rn Italy. The trio hav e a r ace from Wembley Stadium to the San Siro. Je remy drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 and Richa rd and James travel on pu blic transport. Similar to the previous race to Monte Carlo, Richard an d James are not a llowed to u se any cars, a nd Jere my is not al lowed to use any trains. Acc ording to Jeremy, since the last epic race, the trains hav e become fa ster and boats have become slowe r. Richard and James opene d up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arri ve in Paris while Jeremy was sti ll cr ossing th e Engl ish Channel o n a ferry. After reachin g France, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang on ly holds 50 litres i n its fuel tank. After leaving Paris, Richard and James discuss wh at to do upon arri ving in M ilan — as there are two of them b ut only on e ticket. Hu ndreds of miles be hind, Jere my ends p art 1 of th e challenge sta ting out loud, "I' m gon na lose!&qu ot; Star in a Reasonably Priced C ar: Amy Macdonald drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test T rack in 1:44.4. During one of her pr actice runs, Amy acc identally destroyed one of the runway lights, which Jeremy gives to her after revealing t he lap time. Chal lenge, P art 2: The high sp eed TGV slowed dow n as it approached the mountains that surroun d Nort hern Italy. Jeremy began to cat ch up and was ne arly neck and neck with the train, until road work s at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train starts to accele rate again and r eaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and Ja mes use a tube network to get to the streets n ear the fin ish line. J ames maintai ns his op positio n to run on te levision and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a b ar in the IM Villa Veuv e Cliequot. Jame s then assembled a bike which he had hidden in one of his bags and rides to the bar, onl y to f ind that Richard i s already there a nd has won t he race and the ticket to t he foo tball mat ch. Moments later, Jeremy ar rived and accept ed defeat for the first time ever in an epic race of all t he series. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton R eview : Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall A stra V XR, Ford Foc us ST and Renault Megane Renault Sport Cup. Th e Sti g did laps of each car , the Focus being the slowe st at 1:29. 6, the Astra VXR at 1:28.3, and the M egane in 1:27.7. De spite this, Jere my chose the Astra VXR as the best overal l car of the three. News: Th ey discuss the newest c ars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford Mustang would be sold i n Great Brit ain, but t he UK ve rsion wou ld come with a 2.0 EcoBoost en gine, and the importance of the handbrake turn in &quo t;mal e developme nt". R eview: Jeremy tests the al l new Kia Cee'd, put ting it through a m yriad of strange road tests. Including Matt LeBlanc doing a lap with both the old and new C ee' ;d, Bruce W illis (in character as John McClane) testing the horn of the Cee'd, Eri c Clapton testing its auxiliary input ja ck, and Jeremy te sting the Cee' ;d 9;s self par allel p arking feature. Review: As p unishment for losing the previous race, Richa rd is forced to re view the Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, he states that the MXT was an ambitious u ndertaking for the fi rst-time manufac turer, but that it had its share of flaws. Je remy's team win s. 152 Ser ies 19, Epi sode 5 24 Februa ry 20 13 James McAvoy Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard attempt to design a car tar geted at elderl y people. Jerem y demonstr ates the complexity of modern ca rs' dshboard. Richar d brings a Fiat M ultipla an d both modify it. Jeremy bre aks t he dashboar d and r eplaces it considering it t o be t oo compli cated for el ders. Richard asks for th e airbags saying that it i s danger ous for the elderly who are as delica te as children, and tha t he needs it for a safety feat ure. Jeremy m akes a speedometer which reads 20 mph at the top speed, he a lso uses an old design switch for rear fog li ght which does not hing. Jere my installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge wi th a Ro ver one. They paint i t in beige after observ ing the sha de of a hearing a id. Richard uses w ater-resi stant fabric as seat co vers, and while stitching hurts his eye. They complete the car and end the part 1 with Richard wearing heavy bandages over his lef t eye. News: Volkswagen will launch GTI ver sion of t he new Gol f and GT version of Up wil l be launched. Kia will l aunch the Pro Cee'd GT. The M ini Pac eman is launched, and the trio mock the f ront end of the car , cl aiming that it looks depress ing. The trio agree that the British are the best drivers . Alfa-Romeo releases photogra phs of the Gl oria , in which the trio m ake fun of it's name. Richard had ar rived late so James and Jer emy had at tempted to play t ennis with cars (which has a lo t of editing).< br/> Re view: James reviews the new Ra nge Rover in Lon don. The new car is complet ely redesigned , 400 kg li ghter due to A luminium body, has active susp ension, new gearbox, minimali st dashboard and offers better comfort. James then races it ag ainst TerraM ax at Neva da Au tomotive Test Centre , Nevada. The ra ce wa s to a hill 10 mile across, passing through rocky terrain, hillock, mu d, river and sand- tracks. TerraMax w as sw itched to drone mode duri ng t he race to d eflate the ty res a nd take a short-cut . The Range Rover& #39;s automatic Terrain Re sponse Sy stem is demons trated. James takes a longer route to ascend the hi ll but still wins the race. At t he studio, the trio consider the driverless car s to be no t very practical. He drove over gras sy patch in the last corner but ma nages to keep t he c ar und er con trol. Chall enge, Pa rt 2: Jeremy and Richard roa d-test the ir ca r at Christc hurch, Dorset. The car has large front bump ers made up of foam, l arge rear-view mirrors, squea king b all under the br ake-pedal, large magnifying-glass on the dashb oard, sat n av (voiced by Richard Briers) with only four destinatons. Th e car has an arti ficial c at on the roof which later fell over on the way of Bin go hall. Richar d later show s his system to find the locatio n of parked car (the car activates a flare and then releases a balloon). Je remy shows th at t he radio only plays Horse of the Year Sh ow theme on a loop, which bot h later find to be irresis tible to clap alon g. The name of the car is revealed to be The J ames. They pick up three elderly lad ies from a pensioners' home for road- testin g and driv e them to a bowling c lub where it is shown that Richa rd fitted th e airb ag at the rear for parking assist which infla tes the ai rbag on cl ose prox imity. Jer emy and R icha rd buy food fo r picnic, ch oosing only British f oods. They attach the shopping trolley to Tow hitch and head for picn ic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains . Je remy and Richard end up choosin g a picnic spot on roadsid e where th ey find the trolley to b e damaged during rev ersing and the food to be soaked, h owever they ate the food which was n ot ruined. The nex t day bo th leave Christc hurch a nd Jeremy shows his system to prevent the car from b eing driven on the wr ong si de of the ro ad, the car initially so unds alarm a nd late r the tyres, d oors and othe r parts of th e ca r explode w hich stops the car and renders it immobile. At th e studio, James co nside rs the heater to be c omplicated , the trio thank Richard Briers and a nnoun ce the Afric a spe cial. 153 Series 19, Episode 6 3 Ma rch 2013 No Guest First of t he two-episode Africa Special, taking place in Afri ca. The epi sode was shot in 20 12. Challeng e, Part 1: Buy used estate c ars for up to £1,50 0 in Brita in and repo rt at a small village in rural Uga nda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Touri ng, Rich ard in a Sub aru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a Volvo 850 R Wagon. The ch allenge is to find t he true source of the river Nile.< br/> They set off an disc over that exploring isn't as difficu lt as first tho ught when th ey go on a nice e asy drive and find Lak e Victoria, of whom the Vi ctorian Explorers th ought was the source of the Nile. However they are then told that it i s no t the ac tual source of t he Nile an d there w ere two other dispu ted lo cations for it, one in R wanda and one in B urundi. How ever, Jeremy Clarkso n in sisted tha t both of these lo cations were w rong and decide d to head west towards Lake Edward to see whet her there was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu i n Rwanda. In their jo urney west, where they visit the Entebbe Airport an d from ther e se e the Ford Scorpi o Esta te ba ck-up car. They cont inue into Kampala, Uga nda's Capital City wher e they get held up in a traff ic jam overnight, the most hu rrendou s traffic they& #39;d e ver see n. They continue on well-main tained highways west finding their trip incredi bly easy before reaching the town of Mbarara in the south west of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mp igi D istrict. Here they stay in a d isgustin g hotel, after dri ving through tea plan tations in an at tempt to discover a lovely teahouse hotel, which in t he mind of Richard, was bound to found due to tea programmes he'd seen . In Mbarara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a be d with faeces on it. Th ey left the hotel disgusted befor e Richard h as the idea to make the cars &# 39;hotels'. James modifie s his Volvo by adding a library, Richa rd adds a cooker an d Jeremy adds a co ffin. The coffi n he uses to put his clot hes in , he sleeps o n Egyptian Cotton. The y leave for Lak e Edward, camping ov ernight there because of its beauty befo re heading i n searc h of the ri ver heading f or Lake Kivu. None of the riv ers connect th e lake as th ey all head east rather than south. T hey give up, leav ing them disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a ma p and di scovers the source of the Nile must be on the other side of Lake Victor ia. His reasoning is that the Medite rranean Sea is e ffectively a n inland sea a nd so G ibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather than Alexandria in Egypt. After discovering thi s they decide tha t they must drive straight to the other side of Lake V ictoria to get to th e southeast coas t in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
