R eview: James reviews the new Ben tley Continental GT, and not es t he new engine and s ubtle ride c haracteri stics. Believing th at the Bentley, with four wheel drive sys tem and a big, powerfu l engine, can handle thin gs worse than a W elsh countrysid e road, James ta kes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally Cham pionship, with Kris Meeke behind t he wheel, a nd J ames bei ng the co-driver. All of the dragons declare themselves "out" ; and ba ck in the studio, Richard concludes that for the P45 to be put in production, Jeremy would have to be dead. 149 Serie s 19, Episode 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleetw ood Challe nge, Part 1: In another challenge, the presenter s picked three super cars to take o n an epic race. Since it was Hammond's tu rn to select the challe nge location , the te am wen t to the Western United State s. Jerem y se lected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Richar d took the SRT Vip er. After a bri ef drive in the Nevada des ert, the tri o headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specifica lly the d rag strip, to compete in drag rac es organized b y the Las Vega s Police Depar tment; whom organized it w ith the theory th at allowing people to dr ag race, leg ally, at a closed circuit, wou ld prev ent street racing. Despite th e high pe rformance of their cars, the trio were beaten by modifi ed production cars , and 4WD cars, in each of th eir drag races . News: Jeremy comes up w ith a solution on how to solve the cri sis affect ing Britain's town cent res: sack ing all t raffic war dens a nd removing dou ble yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese product de signe d to stop drowsiness behind t he wheel, be fore they took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They praised its styling, bu t criticized its high pr ice tag of £60,000, as well as its target audience. J ames men tions Peugeot Citroen's car intended to run on compre ssed air; J eremy atte mpted to use a fire extinguishe r to demons trate, but failed after only causing himse lf t o turn slowl y ar ound. Ch allenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Springs, t he grou p headed for Los Angele s, Cal ifornia . In o rder t o do "real world" ; testing, Richard devised a challenge t o see who could burn the best ele vens. The thre e instead ended up draw ing a phallus and left LA. The team then stayed fo r a night in Palm Springs. Ho weve r, the producer s gave them a final challenge . The three would drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Cal exico th e following morning, and the last to make it to the Mexican border w ould hav e to travel into the country itself to drive t he Mastretta MXT, a Mexican spo rts car made fun of by the pr esenters in an earli er series, for a la ter segment on the show. In revenge for taking them to America, Jeremy and James sabotaged Hammon d9;s Viper, caus ing h im to lose 10 minutes in t he race . Despite making a stop for f uel, Jere my made it t o the finish line first, with James in second. Richard then walked to the bor der being the last person to arrive. At the studi o, James and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was awful and t hat the Vanquish and LFA were amazing. 15 0 Series 19, Episode 3 10 Febr uary 2 013 Amy Ma cdonald Revi ew: J eremy reviews the Toyo ta GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almost ide ntical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86. Th e Stig then compl eted a lap of the Test Track in 1 :31:3. News: T hey discuss th e new Suba ru Impre za, which i s not coming to UK, and they then talk about t he new Mase rati Quattr oporte.< br/> Cha llenge, Part 1: The produc ers have reserved a sin gle tic ket to a f ootball match at the San Sir o in Milan, Northern Ita ly. T he t rio have a race from Wembl ey Sta dium to the San Siro. Je remy drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 and Richard and James tr avel on pub lic transport. Similar to th e previous race to Monte Carl o, Richard and James are not all owed to use any cars , and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since the last epic race, the trains have become faster and boats have become slow er. Richard and James opened up a big l ead whilst travelling on the Euros tar, a nd arrive in Paris while Jeremy was stil l cr ossing the English Channel on a ferry. After reaching F rance, Jeremy discovers that the Musta ng only holds 50 litres in its fuel ta nk. After l eaving Paris, Richard and Jam es discuss wh at to d o up on arr iving in Milan — as t here are two of them but only one ticket. Hundre ds of miles behind, Jeremy ends p art 1 of the cha llenge stating o ut lou d, " I'm g onna lose!" Star in a Reasonably Price d Car: Amy Macdonald drove the Kia Cee';d around the Test Tr ack in 1:44.4 . During one of her practice runs, Amy acc identally destroyed one of the runway lights, whi ch Jeremy gives to h er af ter revealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2 : The high speed TGV slowed down as it approached the m ountains that surround Nort hern It aly. Jeremy be gan to catch up a nd w as nearly ne ck and neck with the train, u ntil road works at the Mon t Blanc Tunnel slow h im down. The tr ain starts to a ccelerate again and reaches Northern It aly ahead of Jere my. Richard and James use a tube network to get to the streets n ear the finish line. J ames ma intains his oppositi on to run on telev ision and Richard runs o ff al one to find the finish line, w hich is at a ba r in the IM Villa Veuve Cliequot. James then assembled a bike which he ha d hidd en in one of hi s bags and rid es to the bar, only to f ind that Richard is al ready th ere and has won the race and the tic ket to the fo otball match. Momen ts l ater, Jeremy arrived a nd accepted de feat for the first ti me ever in an epic ra ce of all the series. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 17 Feb ruary 2013 Lewis Hamilton Review: Je remy reviews the Vauxhall Astra V XR, Ford Focus ST and Ren ault Meg ane R enault Sp ort Cup. The Stig di d laps of each car, the Focus being the sl owest a t 1:2 9.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28 .3, and t he Megane in 1:27.7. D espite this , Jerem y chose the Astra VX R as t he best overall car of the three. News: They discuss the newest cars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next genera tion Ford Mustang would be sold in Great Britai n, but the UK version w ould com e with a 2.0 EcoBoost eng ine, and the importance of the han dbrake tur n in "male deve lopment". Review: Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee'd, pu ttin g it throug h a myriad of strange road tests. Including Ma tt LeBl anc d oing a lap with both the old a nd new Cee 9;d, Bruce Willis (in chara cter as John McClane) testing the horn of the Cee'd, Eric Clapton testing its auxi liary input j ack, and Jeremy tes ting the Cee'd's self p aral lel parking feature. Jeremy ' s team wins. 152 S eries 19, Episode 5 2 4 February 2013 James McAvoy Challenge, Part 1: Jerem y and Richard a ttempt to design a ca r targeted at elderly p eople . Jeremy dem onstra tes the compl exity of moder n cars& #39; dshboard. Richard brin gs a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashb oard and replaces it consi dering it to be too compl icated for elders. Rich ard asks f or the airbags say ing that it is dangerous for the elder ly who are as delicate as children, and t hat he needs it f or a safety feature. Jeremy makes a speedometer which reads 2 0 mph at the to p speed, he also uses an old d esign switch for rear fog light which does nothing. Jerem y installs a pet-cage an d replaces the bac k seat with high se at chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige afte r obse rving the shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resistan t fabric as seat covers, and while st itching hurts his eye. They compl ete the ca r and end the part 1 wit h Richard wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. News: Volkswagen will laun ch G TI version of the new G olf and GT ve rsion of Up will be launched. Kia will launc h the Pro C ee'd GT. The Mini Pa ceman is launched , and th e trio mock the front end of the car , clai ming tha t it looks depre ssing. The trio agree that t he B ritish are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo releases phot ographs of the Gloria, in which the trio make fun of it's name. Richard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of editin g). R eview: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is com pletely redesigned, 400 kg ligh ter due to Aluminium body, has active suspension, new gear box, minimalist dashb oard and offe rs better co mfort. Ja mes then ra ces it against TerraMax at Nevada Automoti ve Test Cent re, Nevada. The race was t o a hill 10 mile across, passing t hrou gh rocky terrain , hillock, m ud, river and sand-tr acks. TerraMax was switched to d rone mode during the race to defla te the t yres and take a short-c ut. The Rang e Rover's aut omatic Terr ain Re sponse Syst em is demonstrated. Jame s takes a lo nger route to ascend the hill but still wins the r ace. At the studio , the trio conside r the driverless ca rs to be not very practical . Star I n A Reasonably Priced Car: James M cAvoy drove the Kia Cee' d around t he Test T rack with a l ap of 1 :43.6 despite having les s exp erience of driv ing cars. He drove over grass y patch in the last cor ner but mana ges to keep the car under co ntrol. C hallenge , Part 2: Jere my and Ric hard road-test their car at Chris tchurch, Dorset. Th e car has lar ge front b umpers made up of foam, large rea r-view mirrors, sq ueaking ba ll under the brake-pedal, large ma gnifying-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voi ced by Richard Briers) with only four desti natons. The ca r has an arti ficial cat on the roof which later fel l over on th e way of Bingo ha ll. Richa rd later shows his system to find the locat ion of parked car (th e ca r activates a flare and then r eleases a bal loon). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, which both later find to be irresistible to c lap alon g. The name of the ca r is r evealed to be The James. They pick up thr ee elderly ladies from a pensioners' ; home for road-testi ng and driv e them t o a bowling club where it is shown that Richar d fitted the airbag at the rear for parking assist which infl ates the air bag on close proxi mity. Jer emy an d Richard b uy food for picnic, choosing only Britis h foods. They attach the sho pping trol ley to Tow h itch and head for picnic. The roof of the car le aks as it rains. Jeremy and R ichard end up choosing a picnic spo t on r oadside where the y find the trolley to be damaged during reversing a nd the food to be soaked , however th ey ate the food w hich was not ruined. The next day b oth leav e Christc hurch and J eremy shows his system to pr event the c ar from being dr iven on th e wrong si de of the road, the car in itially sounds alarm and l ater the tyres , doors and other parts of t he car explode which stops the car a nd renders it immobile. At the studi o, James considers the heater to be co mplicate d, t he trio t hank Richard Brie rs and announce the Africa special. 153 Series 19, Episode 6 3 March 2 013 No Guest First of the two-episode Africa Special, takin g place in Africa. T he ep isode was sho t in 2012. Chall enge, Part 1: Buy used estate cars for up to £ 1,500 in Britain and report a t a small villa ge in rural Uganda. Jeremy arr ives in a BMW 528i Touri ng, Ri chard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a Volv o 850R Wagon. The challe nge is to find the tru e sourc e of the river N ile. They set off a n discove r that exp loring isn't as difficult as first thought when they go on a nice easy driv e and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Victorian Ex plorers thought was the source of the Nile. However they are then told that it is not the actual source of the Nile and there were two other disp uted locations for i t, one in R wanda and one in Bur undi. However, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both of t hese locat ions were wr ong and decided to hea d west towards La ke Edward t o see whethe r there was a link between that lake a nd Lak e Kivu in Rwanda . In their jo urney west, where they visit t he Entebbe Airpo rt and fro m there se e the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They con tinue into K ampala, Uganda 's Capital City whe re they get held u p in a traffic j am ov ernight, the most hurrendous traffic they'd eve r seen. They continue on well-m aintained highway s west finding the ir trip incredibly easy before re achin g the town o f Mbarara i n the southwe st of the country, via a stop in Jezza , a village in Mpigi Dis trict. H ere they s tay in a disgusting hotel, after driv ing throug h te a plantations in an a ttempt to di scover a lo vely tea house hotel, whic h in the mi nd of Richard, was b ound to foun d due to tea programmes he'd s een. In Mbar ara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jerem y having a bed with f aeces on it. They left the hotel disgusted before Richard h as the idea to make the cars & #39;hotels'. James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin . The coffin he uses to put his cloth es in, he sleeps on Egyptia n Cotton. Th ey leave for Lake E dward, camping overn ight there becau se of its beauty before heading in se arch of the river heading for Lak e Kivu. None of the rivers c onnect t he lake as they all h ead east rather than south. They give up, leaving the m disappoint ed. Then Je remy looks at a map and discovers the source of the Ni le m ust be o n the other side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that t he Mediterranean Sea is effective ly an inland sea a nd so Gibralt ar is the true mouth of the Nil e, rather t han Alex andria in Egypt. Afte r discovering th is they de cide that they must drive straight to the other side of Lake Victor ia to get to the southeast coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
