Despite t he massive twin-tur bo engin e and hor sepower, thanks to its soph isticate d aerod ynamic pa ckage, the car can easily be driven hard without the risk of sp inning. T he Huayra also set the fastest time on the Top Gear Test T rack i n the hands of T he Stig, 1 :13.8 , beating the previous record, set by the Ariel At om V8. News: The Dacia Sandero is now on sale in the UK. The Me rcedes-Benz SLS AMG Bla ck has been updated to pro duce ex tra horsepower, b ut the handling is still challenging. J eremy c laims that he has found a male eq uiva lent version of Fifty Shades of Grey, presenting a kid' ;s book a bout tractors. The new Chevro let St ingray is announced. James M ay turned fifty the previous week. Also, the rally tea m com posed of war amp utees (prev iously mentioned in series 17, episode 6) finally completed their c hallenge of finish ing th e 2013 Dakar Rally. Revie w: James reviews the new Bentley Co ntinental GT, a nd notes the n ew engine and subtle ride characteristics. Believin g that t he Ben tley, with four wh eel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can handl e things worse than a Wel sh countryside road , James ta kes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally Champi onship, with Kris Meeke behind the wh eel, and Ja mes being th e co-driver. Despite the car having less grip, more weight, an electroni c handbrake (un suitable f or usage on a rally stage) and James not being pr oficient at gi ving pace notes, t he Bentley was actu ally faster than one of the full WRC cars. Star In A Reasonably Priced Ca r: Dam ian Lewis takes hi s turn in the car, and d rift s th e Kia Cee'd around the snow- coated test track and cros ses the fi nish line sid eway s, setting the slowest ever ti me of 2:09.1 . Je remy cheers Dam ian up by making a sepa rate board for snow (he justs p ut the time unde rnea th and to the side of the fastest lap time on that board) and says tha t he is the fas test driver ever on their &quo t;snow bo ard&q uot;. Challenge: Jeremy attempts to build a car s maller tha n the Peel P 50, n aming his creation the P45. It was based on a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wrap around t he driver. He then prese nted his id ea to the 39;Dragon s' in a Dragons ' ; Den style format. All of the drago ns declare themselves "out" and back in the st udio, Richard concludes that for the P45 to be put in product ion, Je remy wo uld have to be de ad. 149 Series 19, Episod e 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleetwood Challenge, Part 1 : In another challenge, th e presenters picked three super cars to take on an e pic race. Sin ce it was Hammon d's turn to select the cha llenge lo catio n, the team went to the Western U nited St ates. Jeremy selected th e Lexus LFA, James c hose the new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Richa rd took the SRT Viper. A fter a brief drive in the Ne vada desert, the t rio headed to Las V egas Motor Speedway, specif ically the d rag strip, to com pete in drag races organized b y the Las Vega s Po lice Department; whom organized it with the th eory that a llowing people to drag race, legally, at a closed circuit, woul d prevent street r acing. Despite the high perform ance of thei r cars , the trio were beat en by modified production cars, and 4WD cars, in each of their drag races. News: Jeremy comes up with a sol ution on how to so lve the crisis affe cting Br itai n's town cent res: sa cking a ll traf fic wardens and removi ng double yellow lines. The tr io then rev iew a Chinese product de signed to stop drowsi ness b ehind the w heel, before th ey took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They p raised it s styling , but crit icized its high price tag of £60,000, as well as its ta rget audience . James mentions Peugeot Citroen9;s c ar intended to run on compre ssed air; Jeremy attempted to use a fire ext inguisher to demonstrate, but failed after only causi ng h imself t o turn slow ly aroun d. Challenge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vega s, James and Richard ma ke fun of Jeremy's LFA for l acking not only Bluetooth connectio n and iPod connectors, but cup holders, despite being the most expen sive car. They are th en tasked to head to Willow Springs Intern ationa l Motorsports Park , but they instead stop on a gro oved road, w here each car d rives o ver the grooves and produ ces notes. W hen they re ach Willow Sprin gs, they are forced to play an aeri al versio n of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 laps around the track, whil st being chased by two Aermacchi SF .260 armed with laser guns. In the end, James won the challenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reasonably Pr iced Car: Fleetwood Mac's Mick F leetwood drove the Kia Cee9;d aroun d the Test Track with a lap of 1:45.4 . Chal lenge, Part 3: D eparting Willow Springs, the group head ed for Los Angeles, California . In ord er to do "real world " testing, Richard devi sed a challenge to see wh o could burn the best elevens. T he three instead ende d up drawing a phallus and l eft LA. The team then stayed f or a n ight in Palm Springs. However, the producers gave th em a final chall enge. The three would drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the follow ing morning, and the las t to make it to the Mexican borde r would have t o tr avel into the country itself t o drive th e Mastretta MXT, a Me xican sports car made fun of by the presenters in an earlier se ries, for a lat er se gment on the show. In revenge for taking them to America, Je remy and James sabotaged H ammond's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minute s in th e race. Despite mak ing a stop for fue l, Jeremy m ade it to the finish line fi rst, with James i n sec ond. Richard then walked to t he border being the last p erson to arrive. A t the studio, James and Jeremy end by saying tha t the Vipe r was awful and that the Vanquish and LF A were amazing. 150 Series 19 , Episode 3 10 Fe bruary 2013 Amy Macdona ld Review: Jer emy re views the Toyota GT86 a nd the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almos t identic al, but Jer emy prefers the Toyo ta GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3. N ews: They d iscuss the new Subaru Impreza, which is not c oming t o UK, and t hey then talk a bout the new Mas erat i Quattroporte. Chall enge, P art 1: The p roducers have res erved a singl e ti cket to a football match at the San Siro in Milan, N orthern Italy. The tr io have a ra ce from Wembley Stadium to the San Siro . Jeremy drives the Shelb y Mustang GT500 and Ric hard and Jam es travel on publi c transport. Similar to the previou s race to Monte Carlo, Richard an d James are not allowed to us e any cars, and Jeremy is n ot allowed to use any trains. Ac cording to Jeremy, since the last epic r ace, the tra ins hav e bec ome faster and boat s have be come slower. Rich ard and James open ed up a big lead w hilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Pari s while Jeremy was still crossing the E nglish Channel on a ferry. After reaching France , Jeremy discovers that the Mustang only h olds 5 0 litr es in its fuel tank. After leavin g Par is, Rich ard and James discus s what to do upon arriving in M ilan — as th ere a re tw o of them bu t only one ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challeng e stating out loud , "I'm gon na lose! " Star in a R easonably P riced Car: Amy Macdonald drove t he Ki a Cee9;d aroun d the Test Track in 1: 44.4. During on e of her pr actice runs, Am y acc identally destroyed one of the runway l ights, whic h Jeremy gives t o her after revealing the lap tim e. Challenge, Part 2: The high speed TGV slowed down as it app roached the mountains that surrou nd Northern Ital y. Jer emy began t o catch up and was nearl y neck and neck with the trai n, un til road works at the Mon t Blanc Tunnel slow hi m down . The train starts to accelera te again and reache s Norther n Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard an d James use a tube network t o get to the s treets ne ar the finish line. James maintains his op position to run on telev ision and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line, whic h is at a bar in the I M Villa Veuve Cliequot. James then assemb led a bike w hich he h ad hidden in one of hi s bags and rides to the bar, only to find that Richard is already th ere a nd has won the r ace and the ticket to the football match. Moments later, Jeremy arrived and accep ted defeat for t he first time ever in an epic race of all the seri es. 151 Series 19, Episod e 4 17 F ebru ary 201 3 Le wis Ha milto n Review: Jeremy reviews the Vaux hall Astra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, the Fo cus b eing the slowest at 1:29.6, the Ast ra VXR at 1:28.3, an d the Megane in 1:27.7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the Ast ra VXR as t he best overall car of the thre e. News : They discuss the new est c ars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next gen erat ion F ord M ustang woul d be sold in Great Britain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine, and the impor tance of the handbrak e turn i n " male development&qu ot;. Rev iew: Jer emy tests t he al l new K ia Cee 9;d, putting it through a my riad of str ange road tests. Includ ing Ma tt LeBlanc d oing a lap w ith both the old an d new Cee'd, Bruce Willis (in c haracter as John Mc Clane) test ing the h orn of the Ce e';d, Eric Cl apton testing its auxi liar y input jack, and Jeremy testing the Cee' ;d's self parallel p arking feature. Star in a Reasona bly Priced Car: Lewis Hamilton opens up ab out his move from McLaren to Mercedes AM G and takes the old Suzuki Li ana around the Test Tr ack, setting the fastes t F1 time, a 1:42 .9. Review: A s punishme nt for losing the previous race, Richard is forc ed to review the Mastretta MX T in Me xico. Minding his words, he states that the MXT was an ambit ious undert aking for the fir st-time ma nufactu rer, but that it had its share of flaws. Challeng e: Jeremy a nd James play car rugby u sing Kia Cee9;ds and Kia Sportages at Twi ckenham Stadium and Stig in Vauxhall Astra Police car as the referee. Jeremy's team wins. 15 2 Series 19, Epis ode 5 24 Februa ry 2013 J ames McAvoy Cha llenge, Part 1: Jer emy and Rich ard attem pt to design a car targeted at elderly people. Jeremy demonstrates the co mplex ity of moder n cars' ds hboard. Richard brings a Fiat Multipla and both mod ify it. Jeremy breaks the dashb oard and replaces i t considering it t o be too compl icated for elders . Ri chard asks for the a irbags sa ying that it is dan gerou s for the elderly who ar e as delicate as children, and th at he needs it for a safety feature. J eremy makes a speedometer w hich reads 2 0 mph at the top speed, he also u ses an old design switch for rear fog light which does nothing . Jeremy instal ls a pet-cage and rep laces the back seat with high seat chair s and t he Fia t badge with a Rover one. They p aint it in beige after observing the shade of a h earing aid. Ri chard us es water-resistant fabric as seat c overs, and while s titching hurts his eye. They complete the car and end the part 1 with Richar d wearing heavy bandage s over his left eye. News: Volkswagen will laun ch GTI v ersion of the new G olf an d GT ve rsion o f Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee39;d GT . The Mini Paceman is launched, and the tr io mock the front end of the car, claimin g th at it looks depres sing. The trio agree th at the British are the best dri vers. Alfa-R omeo rel eases photographs of the Glo ria, in which t he trio make fun of it';s n ame. Richard had arr ived late so James a nd Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (wh ich has a lo t of editing). Revie w: James reviews t he new Range Rover in London. The new car is completely redesigne d, 400 kg ligh ter due to Alumini um b ody, has active s uspension, new gearbo x, minima list dashb oard and off ers better comfort. James then races it aga inst Ter raMax at Nevada Auto motiv e Test Centre, Nev ada. T he race was to a hill 10 m ile across, passi ng through rocky terrain, h illock, mud, river and sand-tracks. TerraMax was switch ed to drone mode duri ng the race to deflat e the tyre s and take a short-cut . The R ange Rover's automatic Terrain Response System is dem onstrated. James takes a longe r route to ascend the hill but st ill wins the race. At the s tudio, the trio c onsider the driverless cars to be n ot very p ractical . Star I n A Reasonab ly Priced Car: James McAvoy drove the Kia Cee' d around t he Test Track with a lap of 1:43.6 despite having le ss experi ence of dr iving cars. He dro ve over grassy pat ch in the last corner b ut m anages to keep the car under contr ol. Challenge, Part 2: Jere my and Ric hard road-test their car at Chr istchurch, Dorse t. The car has larg e front bumpers made up of foam, large rear- view mirrors, squeaking ball under the brake-pedal, large magnifying-gla ss on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Briers) wit h only four destinatons. The car has an artific ial cat on the roof whi ch later fell over on th e wa y of Bingo hall. Ric hard later shows his sy stem to find the locati on of parked car (the car a ctivate s a flare and then rel eases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Hor se of the Year Show theme on a loop, which bo th later find to be irresistible to clap along . The name of t he car is reveale d to be The James. They pi ck up three eld erly ladies from a pensioners' home for road-t esting and drive them to a bowling club where it is shown th at Richard fitted t he airbag a t the rear for parking assist which infla tes the air bag on close proximity. Jeremy a nd Richard buy food for picnic, c hoosing only Britis h foods . They attach the sh oppi ng trolley to To w hitch and head for picnic. T he roof of the car leak s as it rains . Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a picnic spot on roadsid e where they find the t roll ey to be damaged during re versing and the food to be soaked, however they ate the food which w as not ruined. The next day both leave Chri stchurch and Jer emy shows hi s system to prevent th e car from b eing driven on the wrong side of the r oad, the car initially sounds alarm an d later the tyres, do ors an d other parts of the car explo de which stops th e car and renders i t immobil e. At the stu dio, James c onsiders the heater to be complicated, the trio thank Richard Briers and announce th e Africa special. 153 Se ries 19, Episode 6 3 March 2013 No Gu est First of the two- episode Africa Special, taking place i n Africa. Th e episode wa s shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used es tate cars for up to £1,50 0 in Britain an d report a t a small village in rural Uga nda. Jer emy arrives in a BMW 528 i Tour ing, Richard in a Sub aru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a Volvo 850R Wagon. Th e challenge is to find the true source of the river Nile. They set off an discove r that e xploring isn't as difficu lt a s first thought w hen they go o n a nice easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Victorian Explorers thought was the so urce of the Nile. However th ey are then told that it is not the ac tual source of the Nil e and there were two other disputed lo cations for it, o ne in Rwanda and one in Burundi. However, Jeremy C lark son insist ed th at both of thes e lo cations wer e wron g and decided to head west towards Lake Edward to see whether there was a lin k between th at la ke and Lake Ki vu in Rwanda. In their journey west, where they visit the Entebbe Airport and fro m ther e see the Fo rd Scorpio E state back-u p car. They continue into Kampal a, Uganda 9;s Capi tal City where they ge t held up in a tra ffic jam overnight, the most hurren dous traffic the y'd eve r seen. They co ntinue on well-maintained hi ghways west finding their trip incredibly easy before reaching t he t own of Mbara ra in the southwest of the country, vi a a stop in Jezza, a village i n Mpigi Dis trict. Her e they st ay in a di sgusting hotel, after driving through tea plantations in an attemp t to discover a lovely t eahouse hot el, which in the mind of Richard, was bound t o found due to tea p rogrammes he 'd seen. In Mbarara they sta yed i n the Economic Lodge with Jeremy havi ng a bed with faeces on it. They lef t the hotel disg usted befor e Richard has the ide a to make the cars 'hotels'. James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Richar d ad ds a cook er and Jeremy adds a coffin . The coffi n he uses to put his c lothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Co tton. The y leave for Lake Edwar d, camping o verni ght there because of its beauty be fore headin g in searc h of the riv er heading for La ke Kivu. None of the rivers co nnect the lake as they all head east rather tha n south. T hey give up, leaving them di sappointed . Then Jere my looks at a map and discovers the source of the Ni le must be on the other side of La ke Victoria . His reasoning is that t he Mediterranean Sea is effectively an inland sea and s o Gibral tar is the true mouth of the N ile, rat her t han Alexandria in Egyp t. After discov ering t his they decide that they m ust drive straigh t to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast coast in Tanzan ia near the Se rengeti.
