The car is capable of savage acceleration, with a l ot of attent ion placed into the bodywork , interior and u tilizi ng cutting edge technol ogy. Despi te the massive twin -turbo engine and ho rsep ower, thanks to its sophi sticated aerodynamic pa ckage, the car can easily be driven hard without the risk of spinn ing. The Huayr a also se t the fastest t ime on the Top Gear Test Track in the hands of The Sti g, 1:13.8, beating the previous record , set by the Ariel Atom V8. News: The Da cia Sandero is now on sale in the UK. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black has bee n updated to produce extra horsepower, but the handling is stil l challengin g. Jeremy claims that he ha s found a male equivalent versi on of Fifty Shade s of Grey, presenting a ki d';s book a bout tractor s. The n ew Chevrolet Stingray is a nnou nced. James May turned fifty the previous week. Al so, t he ra lly team composed of war amput ees (pr eviously mentioned in serie s 17, episode 6) fi nally completed their challenge of finishing the 2013 Dakar Ra lly. Review: James reviews the new Bent ley Contin ental GT, and not es th e new e ngin e and s ubtle ride characteristics. Believing that the Be ntley , wit h four wheel drive system and a big , powerful engine, can handle thi ngs worse than a Welsh countryside road, James takes the car o nto a Welsh stage of t he World Rally Championship, with Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and Jam es bein g the co -driver. Des pite the car having less grip, mo re weight, an electron ic handbrak e (unsuitabl e for usag e on a rally stage) an d James not being proficient at giving pace note s, the Bentley was actually faster than one of the full WRC cars. Sta r In A Reasonably Priced Car: Damian Lewis takes his turn in the car , and drifts the Ki a Cee'd around the sno w-coated test track and cro sses the fini sh line sideways , set ting the slowe st ever time of 2:09. 1. Cha llenge: Jeremy attempts to build a car smaller than the Pee l P50, na ming his crea tion the P45. It was based on a quad bike, w ith bodywork fitted, designed to wr ap around t he driver. He then pre sented his idea to the ' ;Dragons 9; in a Dragons 9; De n style format. All of the dragons d eclare them selves & quot;out&qu ot; and back in the studio, Ric hard conc ludes t hat for t he P45 to be put in prod uction, Jeremy w ould have to be dead. 149 Series 19, Episod e 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleetwood Challenge, P art 1: In another challenge, the presenter s picke d thre e super cars to take on an epi c race. Since it was Hammond 's turn to select the challenge location, the team went to the Western United States. Jer emy sele cted the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Martin Vanquis h, and Richard too k the SRT Viper. After a b rief drive in the Nevada desert, the tri o headed to L as V egas Motor Speed way, specifically the drag strip, to co mpet e in drag races orga nized by th e La s Vegas Police De partment; whom o rganized it with the theory that allowing people to drag race, legally, at a closed circuit, would prevent s treet racing. Despite the high performance of thei r cars, the trio were beaten by modified pr oduction car s, and 4WD cars, in each of their drag races. News: J eremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the cri sis affecting Britain 's town centr es: sacking all traffic wardens a nd removing double yellow lines. T he trio then review a Chin ese pro duct design ed to stop drowsine ss beh ind the wheel, before they took a firs t look at the 201 3 Jaguar F- Type. They praised its styling, but cr iticized its high pric e tag of £6 0,000, as well as its target audien ce. James mentions Peugeot Citroen's car intended to run on compressed a ir; J eremy at temp ted to use a fire exting uisher to d emonstrate, but failed after only causing himself to turn slowly aro und. Challenge, Part 2.: A fter leaving Las Ve gas, James and Richard make fun of Jeremy9;s LFA for lac king not only Blue tooth conn ection and iPod co nnecto rs, but c up holders, despite bein g the most expensive car. They are t hen tasked t o head to Willow Springs Inte rnati onal Mo torsports Park, but they instead stop on a grooved road, wher e eac h car drives over the groove s and produces notes. When they rea ch Willow Spr ings, th ey are forced to play an aerial version of Laser Quest, where they would driv e 5 laps aro und th e track, whilst being chased by two Aermacchi SF.260 armed with laser guns. In the end, James won the challenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Re asonably Pr iced Car: Fl eetwoo d Mac's Mick Fleetw ood drove the Kia Cee ' d around the Test Track with a la p of 1:45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Sp rings, the group headed for Los Angeles, Cal ifornia. In o rder to do &q uot; real worl d" test ing, Richard devised a challenge to see who could bu rn t he best elevens . The three instead ended u p drawing a phallus and left LA. The t eam then stayed for a ni ght i n Palm Spr ings. However, t he produ cers gave the m a fin al challen ge. The three woul d drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the following mor ning, and the last to make it to the Mexican borde r would h ave to travel into the country it self to dr ive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexic an sports car ma de fun of by the prese nters i n an earlier series, for a later segment on the show. I n revenge for taking them to Ame rica, Jeremy and James sab otaged Hammo nd's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minut es in the race. Despite maki ng a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the fin ish line f irst, with James in sec ond. Richard then w alked to the border being the last p erson to arriv e. At the studio, Jame s and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LFA were amazing . 150 Series 1 9, Episode 3 10 February 2 013 Amy Macdonald Review: Jeremy revi ews the To yota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almost ide ntical , but Jeremy pr efers the Toyota GT8 6. The Stig then co mpleted a l ap of the Test Track in 1:31:3. New s: They discuss the new Sub aru Impreza, which is not coming to UK, and they then talk about the new Masera ti Quattroporte. Chal lenge, Part 1: The producers have reser ved a single ticket to a footbal l match at the San Siro in Mila n, Northern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley Stadium to the San Sir o. Jeremy drives the She lby Mustang GT 500 and R ichard a nd Jam es travel o n public transport. Similar t o the previous race to Monte C arlo, Ric hard and James are not allowed to use any ca rs, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. According t o Jeremy, since the last ep ic r ace, the t rains have become faster and b oats have b ecome slower . Richar d and Jam es opened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurosta r, and ar rive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the English Chann el on a ferry. After re aching France, Jere my dis covers that the M ustang onl y holds 50 litres i n its fu el t ank. After leaving Paris, Richard and James dis cuss what to do u pon arriving in Milan — as ther e are two of them but only one ti cket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends par t 1 of the challenge stating out loud, "I9;m gonna l ose!" St ar in a Reasonably Priced Car: Amy Macdonald drove the Kia Cee 'd around the Test Trac k in 1:44.4. Duri ng one of her p ractice r uns, Amy accidentally d estroy ed one of th e runway lights, whi ch Jeremy give s to her after revealing the lap time. Cha llenge, Part 2: T he hig h sp eed TGV slowed down as it approached the mo untai ns that surround Northern I taly. Jeremy began to catch up and was ne arly neck and neck with th e train , unt il road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The tra in sta rts to a cceler ate a gain and reach es North ern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tube network to ge t to the streets near the finish line. James maintains his opp ositio n to run on tele vision and Richard run s off alo ne to find the fini sh line, wh ich is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuv e Cliequot. James then assem bled a bike which he had hidde n in one of his bags an d rides t o the ba r, only to find that Ri chard is already there and has won the ra ce an d the ticket to the football matc h. Th e Stig did laps of each car, the Fo cus bein g the slowest at 1 :29.6, the Astr a VXR at 1:28.3, and the M egane in 1:27.7. De spite this, Jerem y chose th e Astra V XR as the best ove rall car of the thre e. News: The y discu ss the newest cars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford Mu stang would be sold i n Great Britain, but the UK version wo uld come with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine, and the importance of the handbrake turn in " male develop ment". Jeremy's team wins. 1 52 Serie s 19, Epi sode 5 24 February 2013 James McAvoy Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard attempt to design a car target ed at eld erly people. Jeremy demonstrates t he complex ity of mod ern cars'; dshboard . Rich ard brings a Fiat Mu ltipla an d both modify it. Je remy breaks the dashbo ard an d replace s it cons idering it to be too compl icated f or elders. Richa rd asks for the airbags sa ying that it is dangerous for the elderly who ar e as de licate a s children, and that he ne eds it for a safety fe ature. Jerem y make s a speedometer which reads 20 mph at t he top speed, he al so u ses an old design switch for re ar fog ligh t which does nothing. Jeremy i nstalls a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high seat ch airs and th e Fiat badge with a Rover one. T hey pain t it in bei ge after observing the shade of a hearing ai d. Richard uses wate r-re sistant fabric as seat covers, an d while stitching hurts his eye. They c omple te the car and end th e part 1 w ith Ric hard weari ng heavy ban dages over his left eye. News: Volkswagen will l aunch G TI version of the new Golf a nd GT versio n of Up will be launched. Ki a will launch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launch ed, and t he trio mock the front end of the car, claiming that it looks de pres sing. The t rio agree that the British are the bes t drivers. Alfa-Ro meo releas es photographs of the G loria, in which the tri o make fun of i t's nam e. Richard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attempted t o play ten nis with cars (which has a lot of edi ting). Review: J ames reviews the new R ange Rover in London. The new c ar is com plet ely redesigned, 400 k g lighter due to A luminium body, has active suspension, new gearbox, minimalist dashboard and offers better comfort. James then r aces it against TerraMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 10 mile across, passing through roc ky terrain, hillock, mud, river and s and-tr acks. TerraMa x was switched to dro ne mode dur ing the race to deflate the tyres and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Terrain Response System is demonstrated. Ja mes takes a longer rout e to a scend the hill but stil l wins the race. At the studio , the t rio con sider the driverless car s to be not very practical. Star I n A Reasonably Pric ed Car: James McAvoy drove the Kia Cee' ;d ar ound the Test Tra ck with a lap of 1:43.6 despite having less experience of driving cars. He drove o ver grassy patch in the last corner but man ages to kee p the car un der control . Ch allenge , Part 2: Jeremy and Richard ro ad-te st their car at Ch ristchur ch, Dorset. The car has large front b umpers made up of foam, large rear -view mirrors, squeaki ng bal l under the brake-pedal , large magnifying-glass on the das hboard, sat n av (voiced by Richard Briers) with only f our dest inatons. The car has an artificia l cat on the roof which later fell over on the wa y of Bingo hall. Richard late r show s hi s system to find the locati on of parked car (the car acti vates a flare a nd then releases a balloon). Je remy show s th at th e radio only play s Horse o f the Year Show t heme on a l oop, which bo th later find to be irresistible to clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be T he James. The y pick u p three elderly lad ies from a pensioners' home for ro ad-testing and dr ive them to a bowling club where it is shown tha t Richard fitted the airbag at the rear for parking assist which inflates t he airbag o n clos e proximity. Jeremy and Richar d buy food f or picnic, choosing only British foo ds. They att ach the shop ping trolley to Tow hitch and h ead for picnic. T he roof of the car leaks a s it rains. Jeremy a nd Richard end up choosing a picni c spot on road side where t hey find the trolley to be dam aged du ring re versing and the food to be soaked, however they ate the food which was not ruin ed. The next day both leave Chr istchurch and Jeremy sh ows his system to prevent the car from b eing driv en on the wrong side of the roa d, the car initially sounds alarm an d later the tyres, doors and other parts of the car explode which stops the car and renders it immobile. At th e studio, James considers the heater to be complica ted, the tri o thank Richard Briers and announce the Africa special. 153 Series 19, Ep isode 6 3 March 2 013 No Guest First of the two-episode Africa Special, taking place in Africa. The episode was sho t in 2 012. C hallenge, Part 1: Bu y used es tate cars for up to £1,500 in B ritain and report at a small village in rural U ganda. Jer emy arrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richard in a Subaru Impr eza WRX Estate and J ames in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to f ind the true source of the river Nile. They set off an discover th at exploring isn&# 39;t as diff icult as first thou ght when they go on a n ice easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Victorian E xplorer s th ought was the sour ce of the Ni le. However they are then t old that i t is not the actua l source of the Nile and ther e wer e two other disputed loc ations for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. Ho weve r, Jerem y Clarkso n insisted that both of these locatio ns were wrong and decided to head w est towar ds Lake Ed ward to see whe ther the re was a link betwe en that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journey west, wher e they vis it the Entebbe Airport and from the re s ee the Fo rd Scorpio Estate back-up c ar. They continue into Kampala, Ug anda&# 39;s Capital City where they get held up in a traffic jam o verni ght, the most hurr endous t raffic they' d ev er seen. The y contin ue on well-mainta ined highways west findin g th eir trip incredibly easy before reaching th e town of Mbarara i n the south west of the c ountry, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi District. Here t hey stay in a disgusting hotel, af ter driving through tea plantations in an attempt to discover a lovely teah ouse h otel, which in the mind of Richard, was bo und to fou nd due to t ea programmes he'd se en. In Mba rara they sta yed in the E cono mic Lodge with Jere my hav ing a b ed with faeces on it. They left the ho tel disgusted before Richard has th e idea to make the cars ';hotels' ;. James modifies his Volvo by a dding a library , Ri chard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a c offin. T he c offin he uses t o put his clothes i n, h e sleeps o n Egyptian Cotton . They leave for Lake Edward, cam ping overni ght there because of its beauty before headi ng in search of the river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers c onnect the la ke as they all head east rather than south. They giv e up, lea ving them disappointe d. Then J eremy look s at a map a nd discovers the source o f th e Nile must be on the o ther side of Lak e Victori a. His reasoning is th at the Med iterranean S ea is e ffectively an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mou th of the Nile, rat her than Ale xandria in Egypt. After disco vering this t hey decid e that they must drive straight to th e other si de of Lake Victoria to get t o the southeast coast in Tanzania near the Ser engeti.
