Despite the massive t win-turbo engine and horsepower, thank s to its sophisticat ed aerodynamic package, the car can easily be drive n hard withou t the ris k of spinning. The Huayra also set the fast est time on the Top Gear Test T rack in the hands of The Stig, 1:13 .8, beatin g the previous record, set by the Ariel Atom V8. News: The Dacia Sander o is now on s ale in the UK. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black has been updated to produce extra horsepower, but the handling is st ill challenging. Jeremy claims that he has foun d a male equ ivalent versi on of Fif ty Shade s of Grey, presenting a kid 's book about tr actors. The new Chevr olet Stingray is announce d. J ames May turned fifty the pr evious we ek. Also , the rally team composed of war am putees (pre viously mentioned in series 17, episode 6) finally c ompleted th eir ch allenge of f inishing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: James reviews the new Bentley Co ntinental GT, and notes the new e ngine and subtle r ide characteristics . Believing that t he Bentle y, with four wheel drive sy stem and a big, po werful engine, can handle things worse than a Welsh coun tryside road, James tak es the car onto a Welsh sta ge of the World Rally Cham pionship, with Kris Me eke behind the whe el, and James being the co-driver. Desp ite the car having le ss grip, more weigh t, an e lectr onic handbrake (unsuitable for usage on a rall y stage) an d James not being proficient at giving pace notes, th e Bentley wa s actually f aster than one of the fu ll WRC ca rs. Star In A Reasonabl y Priced Car: Da mian Lewis take s his turn in the car, and drifts the Kia Cee'd arou nd the sno w-coated test track and crosses th e finish line sideways , se tting the sl owest ever time of 2:09.1. Jeremy cheers Damian up by making a separate board f or snow (he justs put the time underneath and t o the side of the fastest lap time on th at board ) and says that he is the fastest driver ever on their "snow board". Chall enge : Jeremy attempts t o build a car sm aller than the Peel P50, naming h is creation th e P45. It was based on a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wrap around th e driver . He then p resented his idea to t he 9;Dr agons39; in a D ragons'; Den style format. All of the dragon s declar e themselv es &quo t;out" and back in the studio, R ichard concl udes that for the P45 to be put in product ion, Jerem y would ha ve to be dead. 149 Series 19, Episode 2 3 Febr uary 2013 Mick Fleet wood Challenge, Part 1: In another challeng e, the presenter s picked th ree s uper cars to take on an epic race. Since it was H ammond' ;s turn to select the chall enge locat ion, the te am went to the Western United States. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, Jame s chose the new As ton Martin Vanquish, and Richard took the SRT Viper. A fter a bri ef drive in the Nevad a desert , the trio headed t o Las Vegas M otor Speedway, specifically the drag strip, to compe te in drag races organized by t he Las Vega s Police Department; whom organized it with the th eory that allowin g people to dra g race, legally, a t a closed circuit, would prevent street racing. Despite the high performance of their cars, the trio we re beaten by modified production cars, an d 4W D cars, i n each of th eir drag races.< br/> News: Jeremy co mes up with a solution on ho w to solve the crisis affecting Bri tain 9;s town centres: sackin g all traffic w ardens and removing double yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese product designed to stop drowsiness behind t he wh eel, bef ore the y took a fir st look at the 2013 Jagua r F-Type . They p raised its styling, but criticized its h igh price ta g of £60,000, as well as its targ et audience . James me ntions Peuge ot Citroen' s car intended to run on compressed air; Jeremy attempted to use a fire exti nguisher to dem onstrate, but fa iled after on ly causing himself to tur n slow ly around . Challenge, Part 2 .: After l eaving Las Vegas, Ja mes and Richard make fun of Jeremy's LFA for lacking not only Bluet ooth conne ction and iPod connectors, but cup holde rs, despite being th e mo st expe nsive ca r. T hey are the n tasked to head to Wi llow Springs Inter nationa l Motor sports Park, but they instead stop on a grooved road, where each car dr ives over the gr ooves and produces note s. When t hey rea ch Willow Spr ings, they are fo rced to pla y an ae rial version of L aser Quest, where t hey would drive 5 laps around the track, whilst being chased by two Aermacchi SF.260 armed with lase r guns . In t he end , James won the challenge by being hit onl y 17 times. St ar in a Re ason ably Priced Car: Fleetwood Mac& #39;s Mick Fle etwood drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test Track with a lap of 1:45 .4. Challenge , Par t 3: D eparting W illow S prings, the grou p heade d for Los Ang eles, California. In order to do "real wor ld" testing, Richa rd devi sed a challen ge to see who could burn the best elevens. The three instead ended up dr awing a pha llus and l eft LA. Th e team then stayed for a n ight in P alm Springs. However, the produ cers gave them a final challenge. The three would drive from P alm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the following morning, and the last to make it to the Mexican border would have to travel into th e countr y itself to drive the Mast retta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the presenters in an earlier series, for a later segment on the show. In r evenge for taki ng them to America, Jere my and James sabotaged Hammond' s Vi per, c ausing him t o lose 10 minutes in t he race. De spite mak ing a s top for fu el, Jeremy made it to the finish line first, with James in second. Richard then wa lked t o the border being the last person to arrive. At the studio, James and Jeremy end by saying that the V iper was awful and th at t he Vanqu ish and LFA were amazing.< br/> 15 0 Series 19 , Epi sode 3 10 February 20 13 Amy Macdonald Revi ew: Jere my reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. Th e cars are almost iden tical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86. The Stig t hen co mpleted a lap of t he Te st Tr ack in 1:3 1:3. News: They discuss the new S ubaru Im preza, which is not coming t o UK, a nd they then talk about the new Maserati Quattr oporte. Challenge, Pa rt 1 : The producers have reserved a single ticket to a football match at the San Siro in Milan, Northern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley Stadi um t o the San Siro. Jeremy drives t he S helby Mustang GT500 and Richard and James travel on public transport. Similar to the pre vious race to Monte Carlo, Richar d and Jame s are not allowe d to use any cars, and J eremy is not allowed to use any train s. According to Jeremy, si nce the last epic race, th e trains ha ve becom e faste r and boats have become s lower. Ric hard and James op ened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the Englis h Channel on a fer ry. After reaching France, Jeremy discovers that the M ustang only ho lds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leavi ng Paris, Richard and James discuss what to do u pon arriving in Milan — as there are two of them bu t only one ticket. Hundreds of mi les behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challenge stating out loud, "I' m gonna lo se!&quo t; Star in a Reasonabl y Priced Car: Amy Mac donald drove the Kia Cee 39;d arou nd the T est Tra ck in 1:44.4. Durin g one of he r practice runs, Amy a ccidentally destroyed one of the run way ligh ts, whi ch Jeremy gives to her after revealing the lap time. Chal lenge , Part 2: Th e high speed TGV slowed down as it ap proache d the mountains tha t surrou nd Northern Italy. Jeremy began to catch up a nd was nearly neck and neck with t he t rain, u ntil road works at the Mont Bl anc Tunnel s low him down. The trai n starts to accele rate ag ain a nd reaches Norther n Ital y ahead of Jeremy. Ri chard and James use a tube network to get to the stre ets near the fi nish line. James maintains his oppositio n to run on televisi on and R ichard runs off alone to find the finis h line, which is at a ba r in the IM Villa Veu ve Cliequot. James then assembled a bike which he had hidden in one o f his bags and rides to the bar, only to find that R ichard is al ready there and ha s won the race and the ticket to the foo tball match. Moment s late r, Jeremy arrived and acc epted def eat for the first t ime ever i n an epic r ace of all t he series. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 1 7 February 2 013 Lewi s Ham ilto n Review: Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Astra VXR, F ord Focus ST and Renault Meg ane Renau lt Sport Cu p. The S tig did laps of each car, th e Foc us being the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1 :27.7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the best overa ll car of the t hree. News: They discuss the newes t cars, such as the Al fa R omeo 4C, the next g eneration Fo rd Mustang would be sold in Gr eat B ritain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine, and the impor tance of the handbrake turn in &quo t;male develop ment". Review: Jere my t ests the al l new Kia Cee 39;d, putting it through a myriad of st range road t ests. Including Matt LeB lanc doing a lap with both the old and new Cee& #39;d, Bruce W illis (in character as John McCl ane) testing the horn o f the Cee';d, Eri c Clapton testing i ts auxiliary input jack, and Jeremy testing the C ee'd' s self parallel parki ng feature. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Lewis Hamilton opens u p about his move from McLaren t o Mercedes AMG and takes the old Su zuki Li ana around the Test Track, setting the fast est F1 time, a 1:42. 9. Re view: As punishm ent for losing the previous race, Richa rd is forced to review t he Mast retta MXT in Mexico. Minding his word s, he states that the MXT was an a mbitious undertaking for the fir st-time manufacturer, b ut that it h ad its sha re of flaws. Challenge: Jeremy and James play car rug by usin g Kia Cee 9;ds and Kia Sportages at Twi ckenham Stadium and Stig in Vauxhall Astra Police car as the refer ee. Jeremy's team wins. 152 Series 19 , Episode 5 24 February 2013 James McAvo y Ch allenge , Pa rt 1: Jeremy and Ri chard attempt to design a car targeted at elde rly people. Je remy demonstrat es the complexity of modern cars' dshboar d. Richard brings a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and replace s it conside ring it to be too complicated for elders. Richard asks for the airbags saying that it i s dang erous for the elderly who are as delicate as children, and that he needs it for a safety feature. Jeremy ma kes a speedometer which reads 2 0 mph at the top speed, he a lso uses an old d esign switc h for rea r fog light which does nothing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat w ith high seat chai rs and th e Fiat b adge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige a fter observing the shade of a h earing aid. R ichard us es wa ter-resi stant fabric as seat cover s, and while stitching hu rts his eye. They com plete the car and e nd th e part 1 wit h Richard weari ng heavy bandages over h is left eye. New s: Vol kswagen will launc h GTI version of the new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched. Kia will launch t he Pr o Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is lau nched, and the tr io mock the front end of the car, cl aiming that it looks depressing . The trio agree tha t the Br itish are the best d rive rs. Alfa-R omeo releases photog raphs o f the Gloria , in which the trio make fun of it 9;s name. Ri chard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had a ttempted to pla y tennis with cars (which has a lo t of editing). Review: J ames reviews the n ew Range Rover in London. The new ca r is c ompletely r edesigned, 4 00 kg lighter due to Aluminium b ody, ha s ac tive suspension, new gearbox , minimali st dash board and offers better comfort. James then races it aga inst T erraM ax at Nevada Automoti ve T est Centr e, Nevad a. The race was to a hill 10 mile ac ross, pas sing throug h rocky terr ain, hillock, mud, river and sand-tra cks. Ter raMax was switched to drone m ode during the race to deflate the tyres and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's auto matic Terrain R espo nse System is demonstra ted. Ja mes takes a longer route to ascend the hill b ut sti ll wins the race. At the stud io, the trio consid er the driverless cars to be n ot very practical. Star In A Reasonably Pric ed Car: James Mc Avoy dro ve the Kia C ee';d around the Test Track wi th a l ap of 1:43.6 desp ite having less experience of driving cars . He drove over g rassy patch in the last corner but man ages t o keep t he ca r under control. Chal lenge, Part 2: Jeremy and Richard road-test their car at Christchurch, Dor set. The car has large front bum pers mad e up of foam , large rear-view mirrors, s queaking bal l under the brake-pedal, l arge magnifying-glass on the dashbo ard, sat nav (voiced by Richard B riers) with only f our destinatons. The car has an artificial c at on the roof whi ch later fell over on the way of Bing o hall. Richard later shows his system to find th e location of pa rked car (th e car a ctivates a flare and then releases a balloon). Jere my shows that the radio only plays H orse of the Year Sho w theme on a loo p, whic h both later find to be irresis tible to clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be The James. They pick up three elderly ladi es from a pension ers' home for road-testin g and driv e them t o a bowling club where it is shown tha t Richard fitted the airbag at the rear for parking assist which inflates t he airbag on close proximity. Je remy and Richard buy food for picnic, choosing only British foods. They attach the sh oppin g trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The ro of of the car leaks as it rains . Jere my and Richard end up choosing a pic nic spot on roadside wh ere they find the troll ey to be damaged d uring re versing an d the food to be soaked, however they at e the food which was not rui ned. The next da y both lea ve Chri stchurch and Jeremy shows his system to pr event the car from being driven on the wrong side of the road, the car in itially soun ds alarm and later the tyre s, doors and other par ts o f th e car explode wh ich stops the car and renders it immobile. At the studio , James considers the heate r to be comp licated, the trio thank Richard Briers and announce th e Afr ica speci al. 153 Se ries 19, Episode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest First of the two-episo de Africa Special, taking place in Africa. The epis ode was shot in 2012.< br/> Ch allen ge, Part 1: Bu y used estate cars for up to £1,500 in Britain and rep ort at a sma ll village in rural Uganda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Ri chard in a Subaru Impreza W RX Est ate and Ja mes in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true source of the riv er Nile. They set off an discover that ex ploring isn39;t as difficult as fi rst thought when they go on a nice ea sy drive a nd find Lake Victoria, of who m th e Victorian Explorers tho ught was the source of the Nile. However they are then t old t hat it is not the actual sour ce of t he Nile and there w ere two other disputed locati ons for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. How ever, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both of these locations were wrong and decided to head west towards Lak e Edward to see whether there was a link between that l ake and Lake Kiv u in Rwanda . In their journey w est, where they visi t the En tebbe Airport an d from there see the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They cont inue into Kampala, U ganda 's Capital City wher e they get held up in a traffic j am overnight, th e mo st hurrendous traf fic they' ;d ever seen. They continue on well- maintained h ighways west finding their tr ip i ncredibly easy before reac hing the t own of Mba rara in the southw est o f the country, via a s top in Jezza, a village in Mpig i District. Here they stay in a disgusting ho tel, after d riving thr ough t ea p lanta tions in a n attempt to discove r a lovely teahouse hote l, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due to tea programme s he9;d s een. In Mbarara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jere my having a bed wi th faeces on i t. They l eft the hotel disgusted b efore Richard has th e idea to make the cars 'hotels' . James modifies his Vo lvo by a dding a library, Richard adds a cooker and Jer emy adds a coffin. The coffin he uses to put his clothes in , he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They l eave for Lak e Edward, camping overnight the re because of its b eauty before headin g in search of the river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the river s con nect the lake as they all head east r ather than south. Th ey give up, leavi ng them dis appointed . Then Jeremy look s at a map and discovers the source of the Nile must be on the oth er side of Lake Victoria. His reason ing is that the Mediterranean Sea is effectivel y an inland sea and so Gibra ltar is the true mout h of the Nile, rather than Alexand ria in Egypt. A fter disco vering t his they decide that they must driv e straight to th e other side of Lake Victoria to get to the sou theast coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
