The halves of two bodies , one belonging to a female Swedish p olitician, a re discovered i n the middle of the Øresund Bridge, which connects Copen hagen in Denmark with M almö in Sweden. The body, cut in half at the waist, has been placed precis ely on the border b etween th e countries, thus falling under the jurisdiction of both the Danish and Swedish police agencies. After further exa mination, i t turns out tha t the body i s that of tw o se parate corpses, wi th one half belongi ng to a Danish prostitute. S aga N orén, from the S wedish side, and Martin Rohd e, from the Danish, l ead the investigation to ca tch the murder er.[4 ][5] The investigation quic kly escalates as a jour nali st, Daniel F erbé, whose car was used in the cri me, begins rece iving phone call s. The caller , who becom es known as the " Truth Terror ist", claims t o be com mitting his crimes in order to draw attention to various social pr oblems . A social worker, Stefan Lindberg , whose si ster becomes a victim of the Trut h Terrorist, b ecomes an early su spect. However, events s oon lead the Danish and Swed ish teams to concl ude that the killer has conn ections to t he police. They d iscov er th at the crimes have been planne d over a period of severa l years. The trail eventually leads them to Jens, a Dan ish policeman and former close friend of Martin ';s, wh o was thought to hav e committed suici de after an accident on the bridge caused the d eaths o f his wif e and s on. In the cour se of the investigation, Mar tin and Saga develop a clos e working relationship, althoug h they are very different people. Martin has a twenty-y ear old son from his first marriage, August, who is now living wit h Martin and his curre nt wife, Me tte, by whom Mart in has three children; afte r Martin has had a vas ectomy, Mette discovers that she is expecting twins. Saga liv es alone a nd does not seem to feel she needs a serious r elationship , instead picking up men in bars for casual sex. She ap pear s to have sy mptoms consi stent wi th As perger syndrome, r esulting in diff iculty estab lishing relationships and feelings of inade quacy in man aging peop le; she refuses a promotion f or this latt er r eason. A fter the killer has murdered several people and succ essfully thrown red herrings in the way of the i nvestiga tion, his true purpose - to strike a t Marti n himsel f - eventual ly bec omes clea r. Jen s, now calling himself Sebastian Sandstrod, first a pproaches Mette, who is sus ceptible to his advances, afte r le arning that Martin has slept with C harlotte Söring er, a woman who is periph erally invo lved in the investigati on. Sebastian lures Mette and her ch ildren to a r emote spot where he subje cts them to a terri fying ordeal, locking them in with a room and giv ing her a hand gre nade with its pin rem oved t o hold as long as she can. However, Saga realises that August is the r eal target.
