On a ra iny night in 1928 in a Pennsylvania factor y town called Iver stown, Marth a Ivers (Janis Wilson), thirt een year s old, i s trying to escape fr om the guard ianship of her wealthy, domineering aunt. Her friend, the stree t-smart, poor Sam Ma sterson (Darryl Hickman), comes for her th rough her bedroo m window, but Martha's aunt ca tches th em. While Sam sli ps out unno tice d, Martha hits Mrs. Ivers on t he he ad, causing her to fall down the long stair case and d ie. Though Sam saw nothing, the event was witnessed by Wa lter O9;Neil (Mickey Kuhn), the son of Martha's tuto r (Roman Bohnen), known as Mr. O' Neil. Martha lies about the inci dent to Mr. O'Neil , and Walter suppo rts her.[5] Mr. O'Neil suspects what happened but pres ents Martha 's version of events to the p olice, that an intrude r is responsible; he makes use of his knowledge by having her mar ry his son. When t he police i dentify a former emp loyee of the au nt as th e murderer, the two O'Neils an d Martha help convi ct him; he is punis hed by h anging.[5] Eighteen years later, the ol der O'Nei l ha s died. Walter (now played by K irk Douglas) is the d istrict attorney, while Martha (Barbara Stanwyck) has u sed her inheritance from her aunt to build a large business empire. Their marriage is one-sided; he loves her, but she d oes not lo ve him. Sam (V an H eflin), now a drifter and gambler, stops in the small town by chan ce to have his c ar repaired after an accident. While wait ing f or repairs, at his old home, now a boarding house, h e meets A ntonia "Ton i" Marachek (Lizabeth Scott), who has ju st been released from jail. She is late r picked up for violating her probat ion by not return ing to her home town. Sam goes to see Wal ter, to see if he can use his influen ce t o ge t her released. Walter is convinced Sam has returned w ith blackmail in m ind, giving Walter a motive to run Sam out of town. W hen Martha reacts with joy to the n ews of Sam's return, Walter's jealousy pr ovides an additional motive. Walte r forces Toni to set Sam up. Sam is be aten and driven out of town, but he is too tough to be in timida ted. When all else f ails, Walter mak es a hal f-hearted attempt to kill Sam himself, but is easily disar med. Martha th en inadverte ntly blurts out the c ouple's fears of blackmail, which prove to be ground less: Sam sa ys he did n ot witness the dea th. Martha breaks down and laments that he left wi thout her all those years ago, ta king with him her only chance for l ove and free dom. Sam is torn between his old love and his new. Although he eventually forgives To ni for betra ying him, he and Mart ha spend an idyllic day together, rekindling his feelings for her. Walter arr anges to meet S am to finally settle matters. Before Sam arrives, Walter get s drunk a nd Mar tha finds out about the meet ing. When Walter f alls down the stairs and is knocked uncon scious, Mar tha urges Sam to kill him. Sam ins tead brings Walter around. Marth a pulls out a gun and threatens to shoot Sam in &quo t;self defe nse" as an i ntruder. However, Sam gambles t hat Walter will not back up her story; he turns his back on her and le aves. W alter embraces a nd kisses his w ife; then he points the gun at her midriff. Oddly relieved, she puts he r hand over his hand on the t rigger and presse s. As she is dying, she d efian tly states her name is not Martha Ive rs, but Martha Smith. Out side, Sa m hears the shot. He runs back toward the ma nsio n, but se es Walter, holding Martha' ;s b ody, sho ot hi mself.
