On a rainy night in 1928 in a Pe nnsylvania fact ory town ca lled Ivers town, M artha Ivers (Janis Wilson) , th irteen years old, is trying to escape from the guardianship o f her wealthy, domineering aunt. Her f rien d, the stre et-sma rt, poor Sam Maste rson (Darryl Hickman), com es for her throu gh her bedroom window, but Martha's aunt catches them. While Sam slips out unnoticed , Mar tha hits Mrs. Ivers on the head, causin g her to fal l down the long stair case and die. Though Sam saw nothing, the event was witne ssed by Walter O' ;Neil (Mic key Kuhn), the son of Martha's tutor (Rom an Bohnen), known as Mr. O'N eil. Martha l ies abo ut the inc ident t o Mr. O' ;Neil, and Wa lter suppo rts her.[5] Mr. O';Neil suspect s what happened but presents Martha 's version of events to the poli ce, th at an intruder is responsible; h e makes use of his k nowledge by having her marry his son . When the polic e id entify a former employee of the a unt as the murd erer, the two O'Nei ls and Mar tha help convict him; he is punished by ha nging.[5] Eighte en years lat er, the older O'Neil has died. Walter (now pl ayed by Kirk D ouglas) is the dist rict attor ney, while Martha (Barbar a Stanwyck) has used her inhe ritance from her aunt to build a large business empire. Th eir marriage is one-side d; he lov es her, bu t she does not love h im. Sam (Van Heflin) , now a drifter and gamb ler, s tops in the small town by chance t o have h is car repaired after an accident . While waiting for repairs, at his old home, now a boarding house, he meets An tonia ";Toni" Marachek (Lizabeth Scott), who has just been released from jail. She is later pi cked up for violating her probation by not re turning t o her homet own. Sam goe s to see W alter , to see if he can use his i nfluence to get her released. Walter is convinced Sam has returned with b lackmail in mind, giving Walter a motive to run Sam out of tow n. Wh en Martha reacts with joy to the news of S am's return, Walter 's jeal ousy provide s an additio nal m otive. Walt er forces To ni to set Sam up . Sam is beaten and driven out of town, but he is to o tough to be intimidated. When all el se fai ls, Walter makes a half-hearted attempt to kill Sam himself, but is e asily disarmed. Martha then inadvertently blurts out the couple&# 39;s fe ars of blac kmail, which prove to be groundless: Sa m says h e did n ot wit ness the de ath. M artha breaks down a nd laments that he left wi thou t her al l those years ago, tak ing with h im her only chance for love a nd freedom. Sam is t orn between his old love and his new. Al though he e ventually forgives Toni for be tray ing him, he and Martha s pend an idyllic day together, rekindling h is feel ings for he r. Walter arran ges to m eet Sam to final ly settle matters. B efore Sam arrives, Walter gets drunk and Martha finds o ut about the meeti ng. Wh en Walter fa lls down the stai rs and is kn ocked unc onscious, Martha urges Sam to kill him. Sam instea d brings Walter around. Martha pulls out a gun and threat ens to shoot Sam in " ;sel f defense&q uot; as an intruder. Ho wever, Sam gambles t hat Walt er will not bac k up her story; he turns his b ack on her and leav es. Wa lter embraces and kisse s his wife; then h e point s the g un at her mi driff. Oddly relie ved, she p uts her hand over his h and on the trigger a nd presses. As sh e is dying, she defiantly states her name is not M artha Ivers, but Martha Smith. Out side, Sam hears the shot. He runs back towa rd the mansion, but sees Walter, hol ding Mar tha' ;s body, shoot himself .
