Syno psis Do-seon g (Yoo Mi n) is a child monk who lives at a small mountain tem ple wit h the head monk (Byeon Ki-jong), learning the tea chings of Buddha. He becomes attached to a young wid ow (Choi Eun-hee) w ho comes to pray a t the tem ple, and the childless widow entreats the head mo nk to let her raise Do-seong as her o wn son. Conflict ensues when Do-seong';s real mother (Kim Se on-young) appears , but she leaves t he temple fo r the sake of her so n's futu re. On the day the widow is to take the ch ild down from the mountai n, the head monk discove rs that Do -seong has killed a bird by ensn aringit i n a trap an d decides not to let the boy go into th e secular world. Wh en Do -seong f inds out that his real mother has been to the templ e, he sets out to find her. Al so, each of the film9;s characters is convincingly portrayed through the skillful direction of Yoon Yong-kyu. In partic ular, the sce ne which exp resse s Do-seong's d esperate yearning f or a mother's lo ve and his bir th mother's pas t visit to the temple by comb inin g them i nto a dre am sequence reveals deep cons ideration for articulating story and emotion via a com pressed visu al grammar without tending toward sentimentalism. The movie 39;s final scene , in which Do-seong awakens from his dream and sets off down th e path in search of his mother, is both touching and beautiful. The film also features Choi Eu n-hee, in the part of the young wid ow who warm ly embraces Do-seong with h er love, in one of her first roles.
