Notes &qu ot;A film that has garnered recognition fo r its c inemato graphy and direction by eliminating sentimenta lity and unaffectedly capturing the qui et li fe of a mounta in temple. A Hometow n in Hea rt demonstrates t he camera tec hniq ue and directorial skill o f movie s that app eared after the lib eration of Korea.& quot; A H ometown in Heart, ada pted fr om playwr ight Ham Se-deok& #39;s A Little Mo nk (Do ng-seung), was hailed up on its r elease as "a masterpie ce that marked a new pinnacle in Korean moviemakin g after the li bera tion." Eschewing new-s chool sentimentality to quietly ex press a boy 's longi ng fo r maternal love, the film unfolds the everyday lives o f three gener ationsthe head mo nk, a young monk, and a little ch ild monkagainst the b ackdrop of a quie t temple in the mounta ins. The long shots ut ilized by direct or of ci nematography Han H yung-mo to capture the b eautiful scenery o f the mo untain t emple fro m a distanc e received great critical a cclaim at the time. Also, each of the film' ;s chara cters is convinc ingly portrayed through the sk illful direc tion of Yoon Yong -kyu. In partic ular, the sc ene which expresses Do-s eong 9;s de sperate ye arning for a mother9;s love and his bir th mother's past visit to the temple by combining them into a dream sequence reveals d eep consideration for articulating story and emotion via a compresse d visual grammar without tending toward se ntimentalism. The movie's final s cene, in which Do-s eong awakens from his dream and sets o ff down the pat h in search of his mother, is both touchin g and beau tiful. The f ilm a lso f eatures Ch oi Eun-hee, in the pa rt of the young widow who wa rmly emb race s Do-seon g with her love, in one of her first roles.
