It& #39;s October 1914 and the war is not go ing well. The Ge rmans are smas hing through Belgium and t he allies are in ret reat. Hazel Bel lamy is on a c ommittee with Lady P ruden ce F airfax to find t emporary homes for the 50 00 o r more Belgian refugee s that have come to Britain. F eeling an obligation t o set an example , Ha zel agrees to take in a family and expecting an arist ocra tic family of 3, receives an extende d family o f 5 peasant farmers w ho speak no English. They ta ke residence in the servants9; quarters but w ith the language barrier, i t all proves to be a bit mu ch for both sides. The se rvants find the refugees o dd in their taste s and their refusal to ta ke a bath in part icular off ends them. Rescue of a sort comes from Georgina who returns from a weekend away and h aving been schooled in Switzerland, is a flu ent French speaker. The refugees tell her their horr ific tal e of death and terror at the han ds of the invading Germans crea ting a greater unde rstanding and a degree of emp athy from the ...
