I t';s October 1914 and the war is not going well. The G ermans are smashing th rough Belg ium and the allies are in retr eat. Hazel Bellamy is on a commi ttee wi th Lady P rudenc e Fairfax to find temporary homes for the 5000 or more Belgian refugees that h ave come to Britain . Feeli ng an obligation to set an e xamp le, H azel agrees to take in a family a nd expecting an aristocratic family of 3, rece ives an extende d family of 5 peasant farm ers who speak no English. They take residenc e in the servants' quarters but with the language barrier , it all pr oves to be a b it much for both sid es.
