The film starts with verse 67, “O somma lu ce…” and continues to the e nd. “ O Somma luce” recalls t he first words uttered by Empedocl es in Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub’s 1987 The Death of Empedoc les—“O himmlisch Licht!…” (O heavenly light!). This ext ract from Hölderli n’s text is also inserted int o their 1 989 film Céz anne. “O somma luce” invokes u topia, or better still “u-topos,” Dante, Holderlin, Cézanne… the camera movement, recalling Sisyphus, in the film’s l ong shots, suggests its difficu lty. In O somma luce, with Giorgio Passerone’s Da nte and the verse that c oncluded the Di vine Comedy, we find at the extre mity of its poss ibiliti es, the almo st happy speech of a man who has jus t left earthly pa radise, who tries to full y realize th e potent ial of his nature. Between the two we find the s tory of the world. The first Jean-Marie Straub film shot in HD. So singular are the textual working methods of Straub-Huillet, and now Straub on his own, that it i s har d to grasp how fa r reac hing they are. Di rection is a matter of words and speech, not emotions and action . Nothing happens at the edges, everythi ng is at the core and shin es from there alone. Durin g the rehea rsals we sense a slow process by which ing redients (a text, act ors, an intuition) progress towards cohes iveness. It is, forgive th e comparison, like the kneading of dough. It is the assemb ling a nd working of somet hing until i t becomes s omet hing else… and, in thi s case, starts to shin e. Actually it’s very simple , it’s just a qu estion of opening up to the ligh t material that ha s been sea led up. Here, the pr oces s of kneading is to bring to life and then reveal. The material that is wor ked on is speech. So it is speech that beco mes visible—noth ing e lse. “Logos” comes to the ci nema. The mis e en scène of what words exactly? The process of revealing, “phainestai”; “phainomenon,” the ph enomeno n, is what take sp lace, what becomes visible to the eye. Is “Straubie ” Gree ce? This mise en scène of speech, which g oes beyo nd a close readi ng of the chose n text, is truly comes from a distant source.—Barbara Ulric h
