Martin (John Amplas), a young man who looks around 20-years-o ld, boards a tra in in In dian apol is, India na for N ew York. At night, he breaks into a s leeping car and sedate s a woman with a s yringe full of narcotics. S he str uggles, but he tells her not to struggl e or be upset because she wont feel pain. Af ter a few minutes, the woman falls asleep, an d Martin has sex with t he unconscious woman. After wards, he slices her wrists with a razor blad e so he ca n drink her blood. The woman bleeds to death in her sleep. In th e morning, t he train stops in Pittsburg h, Pennsyl vania where Martin disembarks. He is met b y Tata Cud a (Li ncoln Maazel) an e lderly and hos tile old man who claims to be his cou sin from the Ol d World. T ogether, they tra vel by ano ther train to the t own of Bradd ock, a d ying industrial suburb. They walk to C uda's l arge house where he show s Mart in h is living quarters. Cuda then accuses Martin of being an 84-year-old vampire from his ol d country. He has taken in Martin beca use he is f amily, but tells him, &q uot;First I wi ll save y our soul . Then I s hall destroy you.&qu ot; M artin denies bein g a vam pire an d implies t hat Cuda is merely his uncle r ather than his cousin. Cuda then pu ts up string s of garlic on the doors to his and his gran ddaught er';s room, a nd then holds up a sm all cross wh en Martin approache s hi m. Martin takes away the cross, and e ven takes a bite of the g arlic mocking these attempts by saying bitterly , "There 9;s no real magic... eve r". Cuda tells Mart in that h e can come and go as he pl eases. B ut he also wa rns Martin t hat he will kill him if he kills anyone in Braddock. H e also tells Martin to stay away from hi s grandd aughter Christine (Christine Forrest), whom arrives home from her job that even ing. Cuda intro duces Christine to Martin, but also warns her to stay away f rom him. But Christin e instea d strikes u p a fr iendship w ith Martin who con fides in her about his vampire heritage. When C uda later conf irms Martin';s claims to be a vampire , Christine, not surpris ingly, refuse s to be lieve either one. She think s that Cuda and th e other members of her family have driven M artin to in sanity by making him think that he is a vampire. It is n ever revealed if Martin really is a vampire, or just a shy and lo nely yo uth with troubled issues. Christine is th e only person that Marti n gets the courage to talk to. When Chri stine& #39;s boyfriend Arthur (T om Savini) arr ives at th e house for dinner, M artin stops talking and backs away des pite Arthur's attempt at a conversation. Christi ne l ater confides in Martin that she hopes to lea ve Braddoc k someday w ith Arth ur, even thou gh Martin points out that Arth ur treats her badl y and is both verbally and physica lly abusive towards her. When Christine see s that M artin won't tal k to anyone else , she buys h im a phone whic h he installs in his room. Ma rtin begins to repeatingly call a radio talk show where he de scribes what it9;s like to be a vampire. H e becomes known on th e radio a s &quo t;the Count" to all the listene rs. But the patronizing host (Michael Gornick) thinks he's just crazy. Martin gets a job at C uda's grocery store of stocking shelves, haul ing bo xes arou nd, a nd ev en gets to be a delivery boy fo r some of the customers. One of his customers is a cert ain Abby Santin i (El yane Nadeau), w ho becomes taken in with Martin. She is a very friendly young woman who is depressed when s he tells Martin that her husband is unfaith ful. But Martin still does not have th e nerve to talk with her, so sh e is happy to have someon e to c onfide in with h er life problems. M artin phones the radio show host to descr ibe his inf atuation with the housewife and s enses that she wan ts to have sex with him. When the radio sho w host asks Martin if it is a sexual problem t hat he has i nvolvi ng women criticizing him during sex, Ma rtin repli es that he has never had sex with a woman wh o was awake . O ne day, Martin travels by train to outside Braddock to loo k for victi ms. At a supermarket, he follows a young woman (Sarah Venable ) hom e to her posh suburban house. He sees t he wo man's husband (Richard Rubenstein) leave for a long b usiness trip, and Martin decides th is wou ld be the right time for more feeding. Martin retu rns to the house after dark and brea ks in thr ough the gar age door. But it is Martin w ho gets the surprise wh en he bursts into her bedroom to fin d her in bed with her adu lterous lover Lew is (Al Levitsky). After a vicious struggle, Ma rtin jabs bo th of them with hyprodermic needles with narcotics, and wai ts for the drugs to take affect. He drags the unconsc ious body of L ewis from the h ouse to a clump of tree s acr oss the s treet where he kill s him by shoving a bro ken tree branch into his neck and drinks his blo od. Marti n returns to the house where he ha s se x with the unconscious woma n. But ou t of compassion and pity, he decides to le t her live. Martin begins t o have romantic monochrome visions of his vampire pas t (real or imagin ed), where he drain ed b lood f rom a yo ung woman and was chased through the s treets o f a nameless Europe an town by a torch-lit mob. Duri ng one Sunda y at ch urch, Cuda brings home Father Howard (George A. Romero) who asks him about the p ossibility of exorcism and dem on pos session. Father Howard calls upon the elderly Father Zulemans (Clifford Forre st, Jr.) ov er at Cu da's request. T ogether, Cuda a nd Zulemans co nfront Martin his bedroo m and atte mpt to perform an e xorcism on him. At this point, Marti n remembers ( another real or im aginary flashback), in the Old Co untry of peopl e trying to perform an exorcism on hi m, and he flee s them. Martin t hen flees from Cuda and Zuelmas as well. A little lat er th at night, Martin te rrorizes Cu da in a childr en's playgroun d when he puts on a Dracul a cape and puts false fangs into his mouth to pret end t hat he really is a vampire. One day, Ma rtin finally mus ters the courage to talk with Mrs. S antini during a routine deliver y to her hous e where h e tells her that he& #39;s aw are of her a ttempts t o sed uce him and w ants no w to have sex with her. Afte r having sex for the f irst time, Mrs. Sant ini becomes more depres sed for she tells Mar tin that her husb and just left her because she discovered th at she cannot be ar child ren, and that her des ires towards him are base d on sex and nothi ng else. But Martin wants t o stay with her and help her move on with her life. Martin tells the radi o show ho st abo ut his affair with the house wife and that he n o lon ger has the urge to attack ot her women . Meanwhi le, Arth ur meet s with Cu da a nd tells him that he wants Christ ine to leave town with him so they can get married and start a family. But C hrist ine be comes angry at Cuda when he tells Arthur that insa nity runs in their family and h e shouldn&# 39;t consider havin g children with her . Shortly afterwards, Chri stine pack s up and leaves Brad dock for New York with Arthur despite Martin telling he r that Arthur is abusive towards her. But he r mind is ma de up. Befor e leaving, Christine tell s Martin that she really has no ill feeling s towards him and ju st wants to make a fresh start with her l ife. She says goodbye to him and pr omises to write. But Martin knows that with an abusive and possessive man in Chri stine9;s life, she pro bably w on't. Depressed over losing h is one true friend, Martin phones the radio show host and tells him that he's getting "shaky" and wants to go out looking for more victims. That nigh t, Martin travels to a rough crime-ridden area of Pittsburgh and attacks two derelicts in a alle y, injecting the m with nar cotics. He kills one o f them by silting the bum's wrist and drinking his blood. Martin is abo ut to kill the second one when a police car sho ws up and gives chase . Martin narrowly escapes during a long chase on foot which leads fro m the garbag e strew streets and through a loca l sto re. Martin runs into an old ware house where a dr ug deal is going down. A shoo tout between the two cops and the three thugs be gins where al l of them are killed, le avin g Martin as the s ole s urvivor who cas uall y wal ks awa y from the carn age. One day, Martin f inds Mrs. S antini dead in her bathtub, after she had slit her writs with a r azor b lade. Martin anonymously calls the police to report the body and l eaves. He phon es the rad io show hos t one final time to say that he really doesn't need friend s or peop le to talk to for h e is his own person. But when Cuda learns about Mrs. Santini&# 39;s suicide, is mista kenly think s Martin kill ed her and made it look l ike a suicide as he's done before. Cuda walks into Mar tin9;s ro om while he is asleep and ki lls him by hamm ering a wo oden stake throu gh Mar tin's heart.
