Ralph Burton is a m iner who is t rapped for sever al days as a result of a cave-in. Wh en he f inally manages to dig himself out, he r ealizes that al l of mankind seems to have b een destroyed in a nuclear h olocaust . He travels to New York City only to find it deser ted. Making a life for hims elf ther e, he is flabbergasted to eventually find Sarah Crandall, who also mana ged to survive. Together, they form a close friendship until th e arrival of Ben son Thacker who has managed to pilot his smal l boat into the city9;s harbor.
