Gila Almagor in Tofano's "siege" is on e of the fir st char acters of th e &q uot;modern&quo t; war wi dows t o appear on Israe li cinema screens. The human and social co mplexity of the status of wido ws was not rep resented adequatel y and personally until her complex and fine appearance in this film. It was mostly Precede d by cl iches of h eroic w omen who ha ve sacri ficed f or the na tion with characters to which it was very difficult to get attached, nor to their personal grief. "Siege" was directe d by an unknown Italian director of that period. Although Gilbert o Tofano was brought as a professional director on the wings of inspir ation made by the French New Wave of th ose year s, he managed to tur n out a v ery exciting work which has caug ht the Israeli wa rmth and sense of social siege which surr ounds the Israeli w idow s, including the gr eat expectations from them and the social stigmas. T ofano wrap ped hi s le ading lady wit h lots of warmth and gave a p lace of honor to Almagor's impressive presenc e in the film. Thi s is without a doubt one of Almag or' s best and most acc urate p erforma nces. T he restraint in her performance p lus t he shooting and expr essive use of angl es by Tofano an d his soft European touch which was far off f rom the agg ressive local product managed to produce a sense of documenting an a uthent ic tragedy with a tangibl e personal touch that m inimized th e national dimension.
