" Siege" was dir ected by an unknown Italian d irector of t hat p eriod. Al though Gilberto Tofano was brought as a professional director on the win gs of insp iration made by th e Fren ch New Wa ve of those y ears, he managed to turn out a very exciting wo rk whic h has caught the Isr aeli warmth and sense of soc ial siege which surrounds t he Israe li wid ows, including the great expectations from them and the social stigmas. Tofano wrapped his le ading lady with lot s of warmth and gave a place of honor to Almagor';s impressive presence in the f ilm. This is without a d oubt one of Almagor 's best and most accurate perf orma nces. The restraint in her performance plus the s hooting and expressive use of angles by Tofano a nd hi s so ft Eur opean touch which was far off from the aggressive local produ ct managed to produ ce a sense of document ing an authe ntic tragedy with a tangible personal touch that minimize d the national dimensio n.
