In the end, Po il de Carotte 's suffering b ecomes mo re than he can bear ... Review Drawing heavily on the poignant no vel by Jules Renar d on which it is ba sed, Poil de c arotte is a modest yet appealing film which has stood the test of time ma inly because of the quality of its acting perform ances and its inhe rent humanity. It is more memorable than Juli en Duvivier 9;s ea rlier s ilent version of 1925, also named Poil de Caro tte. The pa rt of Poil de Carotte wa s played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have be en disco vere d whilst walking down the Champs-Elysée s in Paris. Lynen is totally capti vating and the film made him an i nstant star , launching what looke d like becom ing a very promisin g film career – unti l he was sho t de ad whilst fighting against the Germans in 1 944. & nbsp;Harry Ba ur, a l egendary stage and film actor (who also died during Worl d War II, allegedly at the hands of the Ges tapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconcil iation betw een father and son a t the end of the film provides its m ost endur ing image, enoug h to melt the heart of all but th e most stoical of s pectators.
