The main story is set in a British Militar y Intelli gence Offi ce in Whitehall during 1956 , where a small group of foreign affairs a nalysts find th eir quiet e xistence disrupted b y the Suez Crisis. Ewan McGre gor plays M ick Hop per, who is doing his national s ervice as an interpreter of Russian docume nts. Bored with h is job, Hopper spends his days creating fantasy da ydreams that involve hi s work colleagues brea king into c ontempor ary hit songs. Loui se Ge rmaine plays Sylvi a Berry, the blonde wife of the vio lent C orporal Pete Berry (Dougl as Henshall). Sylvia is an objec t of desire for M ick's fe llow c lerk Private Fran cis Francis an d a middle -aged pipe -organist named Ha rold A tterbow (Roy Hudd). U nlike the street-w ise Hoppe r, Francis is a cl umsy Welsh intellectual wh ose academic career has been i nterru pted by hi s army ca ll up. Th e appe arance of the bookish niece of a seconded American officer enables the two conscripts to pair off with suitable partners , after initi al mismatching. Some of the side th emes include the influence of American rock a nd roll on English soci ety, the gulf between the senior analysts , who are regular army officers, and the conscri pted other ranks, the work of Ru ssian playwright Chekhov, and the appreci ation of opule nt theatre p ipe orga ns. The unusual context — a mi litary cultur e trans planted into a civil se rvice style office envir onment — ref lects Potter 's ow n national s ervice during the 19 50s. W hile th is pi ece has the for m of a romantic comedy, unlike the less conventi onal works of De nnis Potter's mid dle period, it is not witho ut graphic sex and v iolence , as well as Pott er' s ch aracterist ic flash es of dreamlike imag ery.
