The main story is set in a British Military Inte lligenc e Of fice in Whitehal l durin g 1956, where a small group of foreign affairs an alysts find their quiet existence disrupted by th e Suez Cr isis. Ewan McGregor pl ays Mick Hopper, who is doing hi s national service as an inte rpret er of Russian do cuments. Bor ed with his job, Hoppe r spends his days cre ating fantasy da ydreams that invo lve his work colleagues break ing into contemporary hit s ongs. Louise Germain e plays Sylv ia B erry, the blonde wi fe of the vio lent Corpo ral Pete Berry (Dou glas Hensh all). Sylvia is an object of des ire for Mi ck' s fellow cl erk Priva te Franci s Francis and a mid dle-aged pipe-organist nam ed Harold Atterbo w (Roy Hudd). Un like the st reet-wi se Hop per, Franc is is a clumsy Welsh intellectual whose academic career has bee n in terrupted by his army call up. The appeara nce of the bookish niece of a sec onded American officer en ables t he two cons cripts to pair of f with suitable partners, after initial mismatch ing. Some of the side themes include the inf luence o f American ro ck and roll on English soc iety, the gulf betw een the sen ior analy sts, who are regular army officers, and t he conscripted other ranks, the work of Russ ian playwright Chekhov, and the appreciatio n of opu lent theatre pipe organs. The unusual conte xt — a mi litary culture tra nsplanted i nto a civil servi ce style off ice environment — reflects Pot ter's own nat ional se rvice durin g the 1950s. While this piece has the f orm of a romantic comedy, unlike the less c onven tion al works of Dennis Potter's m iddle period, it is no t without grap hic sex and violence, as well as Potter 9;s characte ristic flashes of dreamlike imagery.
