Riv er of Gra ss has all the elements of a conventional road movie: a car, a gun, cri mina l plans, and young lovers on the run from an angry father who also h appens to be a suspended p olice of ficer. But writer and director Ke lly Reichardt has instead ta ken th ese familiar eleme nts and fa shioned an anti -road movie, a deadpan film that is m ore existentiali st comedy than crime d rama. T he young l overs in que stion are Cozy, the cop9;s daugh ter, an d Lee Ray , a shady character f rom the wrong end o f town. Le e Ray comes into possession of a pistol, and soo n he and C ozy find themselves unintentionally involved in a shootin g. Fearing capture by the law, the two make plans to le ave to wn, co mmitting a series of robberies on the way. However, they don' t manage to get very far; indeed, the film';s c entral premise is how the romantic myth of lovers on the lam proves disappointi ng in the face of a far more pedest rian reality.
