River of Grass has all the e lements of a conventio nal roa d movie: a car, a gun , criminal p lans, a nd young lovers on the run from an angry father who also happens to be a suspended police off icer. But wri ter and director Kelly Reichardt has instead taken these familiar elements and fashi oned an anti-road m ovie, a deadpan film that is more existentialist comedy than crime d rama. The young l over s in ques tion are Cozy, th e cop's daughter, and Lee Ray, a shady c haract er from the wr ong end of town. Lee Ray comes into possession of a p istol, and soon he and Cozy f ind themselv es uninte ntio nally involv ed in a shooting. Fearing capture by the law, the two mak e plans to leave town, comm itting a se ries of robb eries on the way. H owever, the y don't manage to get very far; indeed, the f ilm';s central premi se is how the romantic myth of lovers o n the lam pro ves disa ppointing in th e face of a far more pedestrian r eality.
