Deputy A ssistant Com missioner Charlie Hillian i s killed on the night o f his re tire ment party . Hillian was at o ne tim e a senior offic er in Oxford and wa s in fact Morse's boss . He was also writing a bo ok about his most memorab le case s, including one abo ut the unsolved death of an 8-year-o ld girl some 18 years ago. T he suspect in that case, Frederick Redpath, was at Hillian's house the day he die d and that chapter from the manus cript is missing. There are other suspects however, including Hillian's ghos t writer who will now receive all of the book's roy alties; a handyman who was workin g on the proper ty; and Redpath's daughter, who k new the little girl who was killed a ll those years before.
