Deputy Assis tant Commissioner Charlie Hillian is ki lled on the night of hi s retirement p arty. Hill ian was at one time a senior officer i n Oxford an d was in fac t Morse's boss. H e was also writing a book about his most memo rable cases, inclu ding one about the unsolved death of an 8-yea r-old girl some 18 y ears ago. Th e suspect in that case , Frederick Redpath, wa s at Hillian's hou se the day h e died and that chapter from the m anuscript is missing.
