Fern ando Di Leo 's &qu ot;Milano Calib ro 9" ; is an out- and-out masterpi ece of Italian Crime cinem a and, in my opinion, one of the most ast onishing crime stories ever t old. The firs t film in Di Leo';s excellent ';Milieu' trilo gy, "Milano C alibro 9 " was followed by &quo t;La Mala Or dina" (aka. "Ma nhunt ", al so 1972) and the brilliant & quot;Il Boss" (1973). The three film s are not connecte d story-wis e, but all three ar e excellent, and highly realistic portrayals of or ganized cr ime. As far as I am co ncerned &qu ot;Manhunt" is (allthough excell ent) slightl y in ferior to this one and "Il Bos s" w hich both stand ou t as absolute all-time highlights of crime cinema. "Milano Ca libro 9" is the best of the m all, a fil m that is astonishing in a ll aspects, be it the ingenious pl ot t hat, apart from a compelling story and clever t wists, includes social criti cism, the p erformances, the gritty atmosphere and s uspense or the brilliant sco re. I can hard ly find the right wo rds to expre ss my admiration for this masterpiece which easily ran ks am ong the grea test Gangster flicks e ver b rought to screen.
G astone Moschin stars as Ugo Pi azza, a toug h and e lliptical ex-convict who has just been releas ed from prison. Immediately after his release, Ug o is approached by members o f the Milan mob lead by the iras cible gangs ter Rocco ( Mario A dorf), as th ey suspect him to be resp onsi ble fo r the disappearanc e of a large sum of money belonging to their boss, an America n (Lione l Stander) who controls the organized crime in Milan...
"Mil ano Calibro 9" ; is a film that delivers an astonishingl y reali stic mood o f the underw orld like hardly another. The int riguing storyline goes in ha nd with interesting characters, raw atmos phere, suspense and breatht aking a ction, socia l criticism and bru tal violence. The film is simply stu nning from the be ginning to the end, which is even int ensified by the brilliant score, a collab oration of the famous compo ser Luis Enríquez Bacalov and the Italian Progressive Rock band Osa nna. Ugo Piazza must be one of the most charismat ic gangst er characters ever i n cinema, and Gastone Moschin was the pre fect choice for the r ole. Moschi n delivers a bril liant perfo rmance, a nd the rest of t he cast is also great. M ario Adorf is irascible li ke a rabid d og as the ferocious gangster Rocco, a role that fits him like a glov e. The great Lionel Sta nder fit s perfectly in his role of th e Americ an Mafia Don.
The t wo cop charact ers in the film are pl ayed by two of the greatest reg ular s of It alian genre-cinema, Lui gi Pistilli and Frank Wolff (who committed suicide b efor e the film was releas ed). The ravishi ng Barbara Bouchet is as tonishing and incredi bly sexy in the role of Ugo Piazza's stripper gir lfriend. Bouchet is both a st unning beauty and an excellent actress a nd this is doubtlessly on e of her mo st memorabl e rol es. Thi s is a lso a political film and direc tor Di Leo embed ded a lot of social criticism about topics like corr uption. This film simply has eve rything one can poss ibly des ire in cinema. Fil ms li ke "Milano Ca libro 9" are the reason why I love cin ema. This is an absolute m asterpiec e in all regards and, without exaggera tion, one of the greatest Crime flicks ever made! The i ngenious openin g scene a lone is m ore memor able than most fil ms get in two hours
