T he subjec t of Danièle Huille t and Jean-Marie Straub ’s Der Tod des Empedokles (The Death of Empe docles, 1 987) is the Greek pre-Socratic philosopher Emp edocles (c. 490 BC – 430 BC), who lived in the G reek colony of Agrigent um in Sicily. His theories are menti oned in several of Plat o’s dialogues. He m aintained that all matter is ma de up of four i rreducible e lements: water , eart h, air and fire. A mystic and a poet, he is considered to be the founder of classica l rhet oric. He is also thought to be the last Greek ph ilos opher to write in verse; two fragments of his works survi ve: Katharmoi (Purif icati ons) and P eri Phuseôs (On Na ture). An advocate of democracy, he came into conflict with his fellow citizens of A grigentum and, as result, was banished with his young disci ple, Pausani us. When he was asked to return, he pr eferred to commit suicide by thro wing himself into the active vo lcano at Mount Aetna. The German w riter F riedrich Hölderlin wro te two ver sions of Der To d des Empedokles in 1798 an d 1800, an d a final third version in 1820, all thr ee ultimat ely unfi nish ed. They w ere conceiv ed as five -act trag edies and all three differ in plot. According to Michael Hamburger, H ölderlin’s English -language translator , the m ain reason why Hölderlin finished no v ersion of the play must be that he rem ained too clos ely identified with Empedocles, at the very period in h is life when h is own view of th e poet as philosopher, prophet and priest – and as tragic hero – was subject to perpetual crisis a nd re-exa mination. Huillet-Straub’s The Death of Empedocles i s based on Hölderlin’s first version (the lo ngest of the three), wh ereas Blac k Sin is bas ed on the third version.
