Frank L loyd Wright is America's greatest-ever a rchite ct. However , few peopl e know ab out the Welsh roots tha t sha ped hi s life and world-famou s bui ldin gs. Now, leading Welsh ar chitect Jonathan Adam s sets off across America to ex plore Frank Lloyd Wright 's masterpieces for himself. Along the way, he uncovers the tempest uous life story of the man behind them and the significan ce of h is radical f amily background. In a career spann ing sev en decade s, Frank Llo yd Wright built over 5 00 bu ildings, an d changed the fac e of modern archit ecture: Fallingwater, the house o ver the waterfal l, has b een called the greates t house of the 20th century; the spiral ling Gug genheim Mus eum in New York reinvented the art muse um; the concrete Unity Temp le was the first truly modern bu ildin g in the wo rld. But the un derlyin g philosophy that links all Wrig ht's buildings is as impo rtan t as anyth ing he built. Those i deas were rooted in the Unitarian religion of Frank Lloyd Wright 9;s mother. Anna Lloyd Jones was born and raised near Llandysul in w est Wales an d migrated to America with he r family in 1844, most likely to escape religiou s persecution. Her son, Frank, was rais ed in a U nitarian community in Wi sconsin, a small piece of Wales in Ame rica. The v alues he absorbed there wer e based on the san ctity of n ature, the importance of hard work, an d the n eed to que stion conv ention and defy it wh ere neces sary. Wri ght's a rchitec ture was shaped by, and expressed, these beliefs . Frank Lloyd Wright set out to create a ne w American archi tectu re for a new c ountry. H e bu ilt his own lif elong home in t he valley h e was raised in, and he named i t after an ancient Welsh bard called Taliesin. It was the scene of many a dventures - and a horri fic cri me. In 1914, a servant at T aliesin ra n amok and killed seven people including W right39;s partne r, Mamah Cheney, and her two you ng children. Wright rebui lt his hom e and went on to marry a Monte negrin wo man, Olgivanna Mil anoff, s ome 30 years youn ger than him. It w as Olgivanna who struck upon the ide a that saved Wright 9;s career aft er the Wall Stre et Crash and personal scandal laid it lo w. She decide d that her husband should take on apprentices an d that the appren tices sho uld pay for the privilege. The Taliesin F ellowship had a hands-on approa ch, with apprentices often building ext ensions t o Wright& #39;s o wn houses, labouring and cooking for him. S omehow it work ed, lasting for de cades a nd nurturing h undreds of young talents. Fran k Lloyd Wright d ied in 195 9 aged 91 while work ing on his final m asterpiece, New York 's inco mparable Guggenheim Mu seum. He had been born in the wake of the American civil war, the son of a pioneer, a nd died a te levisio n celebrity, in the space age. He is buried i n the shadow o f Taliesin, alongside his Welsh ancestors . A 150 years after his birth, Jo nathan Ada ms argue s that Frank Lloyd Wright i s now a vitally import ant figure who ca n teach us how to build for a better world. Wrig ht believed in what he c alled organic archite cture; buildings that grace the landsca pe, e xpress an idea of how to live and respond to indi vidual needs. This besp oke ap proach - a philosoph y, not a sty le - puts hi m at the heart of moder n architectural think ing.
