Set in both the late 80's and current day, &quo t;Back in the Day&qu ot; is a g ritty tale abou t Anthony Rodri guez (Willia m DeMeo) , a ha lf Italian - half Puerto Rican young tee nage r growing up on the st reets of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn ; a then very da ngerous and racist neigh borhood filled with bullies, b ig shots and social cl ubs where all of the neighborhood shots were ca lled. Anthony had to endure an abusive, unemplo yed, alco holic fath er but was bless ed with a nurturing, hard-working mo ther w ho he loses at a very early a ge and is devastate d by it. In spite of his b itterness, he struggles to uphold the mora ls his Mothe r taught h im and ret ain his dignity in spite of be ing up again st all odds. He i s taken under the wing of a local mob boss, Enz o DeVino (Michael Madsen), who supp orts Anthony 's w ishes to escape his demons through the sport of boxing. Enzo con nect s Anthony w ith a trai ner (Danny Glover), who means busin ess, and t urns Anthony into a con tender although his troubled life and friend s, wh o seem to always get him int o trouble, hinder his caree r.
