Salomé (1923), a silent film directed by Charles Bryant and starring Alla Nazimova, is a film adaptati on of the Osca r Wilde play of t he same name. The play it self i s a loose retelling of the bibli cal story of King Herod and his execution of John the Baptist (here, as in Wilde';s play, calle d Jokaanan) a t the request of h is step daught er, Salomé, whom h e lusts afte r. Salomé is often c alled one of t he first a rt film s to be made in th e U.S.[citation needed] The highly stylized costumes, exaggerated acting (even for th e period), minimal sets, and absence of all but the most n ecessary props make for a screen image much mor e focused on a tmosphere and on conveying a s ense of the characters 9; individual heightened desires t han on convention al plot development. Despite th e film being only a lit tle over an hour in length and having no real action to spe ak of, it cost o ver $350,000 to make. All the sets were c onstructed indoors t o be ab le to have complete control over the lighting. The film w as shot completely in black and white, matching the illustr ations done by Aubrey Beardsle y in the pri nted edition of Wilde's play. The c ostumes, designed b y Nata cha Rambova, used material only from M aison Lewis of Par is, such as the real s ilver la mé loincloths worn by th e guar ds. No majo r st udio would b e associated with the film, and i t was years after its comp letion before it was release d, by a min or in dependent distributor. I t was a complete failure at the t ime and marked the en d of Nazimova& #39;s producing career. A longs tanding rumor, w hich seems to have started while t he film was still in production, suggests that its cast is comprised entire ly of gay and bisexual a ctors in an homage to Os car Wild e, as per star and producer Nazimova's deman d. It is , of c ourse, impos sible to say, but one of the extras in Salomé reported tha t a number of the cast members—both featured and ext ras—were indeed gay , but not an unusu al perc entag e of them , and c ertainly not a ll of them. What can be s aid is that Nazimov a herself was a lesbian, the two gu ard characters (who , next to Salo mé, have the most screen time) are at le ast played very stereotypi cally gay, and s evera l of the fem ale cour tiers are men in drag.
