Whenever I se e La Pau ra I think of it as a companion pie ce to Eyes Wide Shut, or m aybe it is the other way arou nd. Adultery make s both films tick but in diff erent ways. I think Ph illip French wa s right on the money when he pointed out a Wizard of Oz thing in Kub rick 39;s last wor k. Like Dorothy, Tom and Nicole go through fantas ies and nig htmares an d at the end Dorothy' ;s reassuri ng childish motto "there 's no place like hom e" is i ronically updated to the adult circumstantial ad age "there& #39;s no s ex l ike marital sex&qu ot;. K ubrick 's take is i ntellec tual, he never lea ves the world of ideas to touch th e ground. He taunts the audience first with an erot ic movi e and then with a thriller a nd refuses to deliver either of t hem. He was married to his thir d wife for 4 0 years, u ntil he died. Rossellini was sti ll marrie d to Ingri d Bergman w hen he directed La Paura; they had b een adulterous l overs and th eir inf idelity widely criticized La Paura is a tale, a noir ish one. The noir intrigue is solved and the tale has a happy ending. The cit y is noir; the count ry is tale , the territory whe re childho od is possible. The transition is operated in the most re gular way: by ca r, a lon g-hel d shot taken from the front of the car as it ride s into t he road, as if we we re ente ring a different dimension. Irene (Bergman) sta rts the movie: we just see a dark city landscape but her v oice-over narration te lls us of h er an gst and informs u s that the story is a f lashback, h ers. Bergman's been cheating on her husband. At first guilt is just psycho logical tort ure but soon exp ands into economic blackma il and then grows into something else. From beginning to end t he movie focuses on what Bergm an feels, e very o ther charact er is there to make her feel something. O nly when the director gives away the plot before th e main character can find out does he want us to f eel somethin g Bergman still can' t. When she finds out, w e have already experien ced t he warped m echanics of the situation and we may focus once again on the emotional impa ct it has on Bergman 39;s Irene. In La Paura treasons are not imagined but r eal, nig htmares are deliberate and th e couple';s venom suppurates in bitter ways. Needless to say, Ingrid has another o f her rough rides in the movies but Rossell ini doesn 't dare put h er away as he did in Eu ropa 51, nor does he abandon her to the inscruta ble impassivity of nature (Strom boli). His gift is less transcendent and fragile t han t he concl usion of Viaggio in Ita lia. He just gives his wife as much of a fairy tal e ending as a real woman can have, a human landsca pe where she can f inally feel at home. Back to the country, a half l it interior sc ene where shadow s suggest the comfort of sleep.
