Lois's long hours d rive her secr etary to quit, and she replace s her with Tom Sheridan , who happens to be in the offi ce demonst rating a rowing machine. T om likes the work and continues to ad vanc e until he is indispensable to Lois. Ru th Holman, Tom's fia ncée, is jea lous of Tom& #39;s r elationship with Lois and with some reason , as he is falli ng in lov e with her. In the meanti me, Fred is having an affair with Ann Le Mair e, a woman whose interests a re closer to his own. Because he feels his love for Lois is hopeless, Tom qui ts his job and plans his ma rriage to Ruth. L ois tries to patch th ings up with Fred, but he suggests that they divorce instea d. On Tom 9;s l ast nigh t, Lois keeps him working l ate. Ruth is furious and storms up t o the office where L ois and Tom are dining. She thr eatens to tell Lois's husba nd about the ir relationsh ip, which leaves the way clear for Lois to announce her pending di vorce.
