In the Alpine village o f Tolzbad in the 1 800s, t he townsfolk tal k quietly and res train their movements lest t hey incur avalanches. T his atmospher e lends itse lf to repressed emotions - shown t hrough the par allel stories of butler student Joha nn lusting after his mother (an old flam e of the mysterious Count K notkers) and Klar a's attraction to her father (who lus ts after his other daughter), leading to duels a nd suicid al plunges galore.
