This movie will be dismissed for polit ical reasons. Th ere are a few laughs at the expense of characters that cer tain reviewers want to see only in an e levated li ght. B ut In tern Academy as a f ilm improves as it goe s along. The look is at f irst kind of washed out, but eventually there are s ome more pleasing s ets. I had heard this was sho t on video, but I coul d not tell as I watched it opening day. Purely , I supported it because Dave Thomas des erves a hit , and he has the sam e birthday as me . Also, I a ppre ciate his c ritical vi ews of th e media in his interviews for this f ilm. I do think tha t he miscast himself a l ittle bit in this film. Although Danny is shown in his requisite sunglasses and bang ing a drum in one scene, h e and Thomas shou ld have switc hed characters. He m ight be mo re bel ievable as a cold authori ty figure teachin g students and rattling off lists of maladi es, whereas Dave Thomas is best as kind of a weasel or prankster or buffoon - which is especially evident when he ru ns. Dave Foley i s right on the money as a smu g, egotistical hear t specialis t, though it is jarring to s ee him in gray h air - especiall y becau se it is believa ble. The movi e likes to wallow, and the organ storage fight i s a bit unb elievable, as is th e mouth exam ination sce ne which contai ns Maurey Chay kin's excellent cameo performance. That character could have been more central, a ccidentally em barrassing people. Even though the girl who is embarrassed would have known better.
