The Do ll is an adaptatio n of th e novel, The Doll (novel ) by Bolesław Prus, whic h is regard ed by many as one of the fi nest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), made Bolesław Pr us a pot ential candidate for the Nobel Prize in li terat ure. The influe nce of Émile Zola is ev ident, and some h ave compa red the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert; both were Prus's contemporaries. The movie, h owever, may be mor e compared to Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red a nd the Bl ack). The Do ll constitutes a pa norama of life in W arsaw bet ween 1878 and 1879, and at the same t ime is a s ubtle story of three generations of Polish idea lists, their psy chologica l complications, their involvement in the history of the ni neteenth centu ry, social dr amas, mor al problems and t he expe rience of tragic ex istence. At the same time this story describe s the disi ntegration of social r elationships and the growing separation of a socie ty whose ari stocrati c el ite spreads the models o f vanity an d idle ness . In the bad air of a backward country, ant i-Semitic ideas ar e born, valuable i ndividua ls meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successful.< br/> This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche mercha nt, Sta nisl aw Wokuls ki, throug h a series o f trials and tribulati ons occasioned by his obsessi ve passion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by t he famous Polish actre ss, Beata Tyszkiewic z. P lot: As a descendant of a n impoverished Po lish noble f amily, young Wokulski is for ced to work as a waiter at Hopfer ';s, a Warsaw res taurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking par t in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsar ist Rus sia, he is senten ced to exile in Siberi a. On eventual retu rn to W arsaw, he becom es a salesman at Mincel's haberdashery . Marrying the late own er39;s widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to se t up a part nership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two mercha nts go to Bulgaria during the Rus so-Turkish War of 1877- 78, and Wok ulski makes a fortune supplying th e Russian Army. The ente rprising W okulski now proves a roman tic at heart, falli ng in love w ith Iza bela, daughter of the vacuous, bank rupt aristocrat, To masz Łęc ki. In his q uest to win Izab ela, Wokuls ki b egins frequenting theatres and aristocrati c salons; and to help her financially distresse d father, f ounds a company and sets the aristocra ts up as shareholders in his b usiness.Th e in dolence of these arist ocra ts, who secure with their p ensions, are too laz y to un dertake new busines s risks, frustrates W okulski. His abil ity to mak e money is respected bu t his lac k of family and social rank is condescended to. Because of his "help" (in s ecret) t o Izabela 9;s impe cunious but influenti al father, the girl bec omes aware o f his af fection.
