John Kent (Randolph Scot t), a former star football player at Harvar d, go es to Paris with his friend Huck Haines (Fred Astaire) and the latt er's dance band, the W abash Indianians. Alexander Voyda (Luis Alberni) has booked the ban d, but refuses to let them play when he finds the musicians are not the Indians he expected, but merely from Indian a (Huck Haines and his I ndianians Band). John turns to th e only per son he kno ws in Paris for help, his Au nt Minnie (H elen Westley), wh o owns t he fashionable "R oberta" gown s hop. While there, he mee ts her c hief a ssis tant (and se cretly the head designer), S tephanie (I rene Dunne). John is quickly smitten with her. Meanwhile, Huck unexpectedly stumbl es upon someone he k nows ve ry well. "Counte ss Sc harwenka", a temperam ental customer at Roberta's, turn s out to be his hometow n sweetheart Liz zie Ga tz (Ginger Rogers). She gets Huck's band an e ngagement at the nightclub where she is a featured entertainer. Two things tr ouble John. One is Ladislaw (Victor Varconi), the ha ndsome Rus sian deposed prince and doorman who seems too intere sted in Stephanie. The other is the mem ory of Sophie (Claire D odd), the s nobbish, c onceited gi rlfri end he left behin d after a qu arrel over his lack of sophisticat ion and po lish. When A unt Minnie dies unexpectedly without leaving a will, John inherit s the shop. Knowing nothing a bout women' ;s fas hion and that his au nt intended for Stephanie to inherit the business, he pers uades Steph anie to remain as his partner . Corres pondents flock to hear what a football player has to say about f eminine fashions. Huck gives the answers, making a lot o f weird st atements ab out the innov ations John is planning to introduc e. Sophie arrives in Paris, attracted by John's good fortune. She enters the shop, looki ng for a dress, but is dissatisf ied with e veryt hing Stephanie sho ws her . Huck p ersuades her to choose a gow n that John had orde red discarded as too vulgar. When John sees her in it , the y quarrel for the final time. Joh n reproac hes Steph anie for selling Sophie the gown. Terribly hurt, Step hanie quit s the sh op. With Rober ta&# 39;s puttin g on a fashion show in a week, Huck takes over the design work, with pr edictab ly bad resul ts. Wh en Stephanie sees his awful creations, she is persuaded to return to save Robe rta's reputat ion. The show is a triumph, helped by the entertaining of Huck, Co untess Scharwe nka, and the band. At the show, John overhears that she and Ladislaw are leaving Paris and mistakenly assumes that they have marr ied. Later, he congratul ates her for becoming a princess. When she informs him that Ladi slaw is merely her cousin and t hat the title h as been hers since birth, the lovers are reunited .
