It is a gr eat film by a gr eat director.Kira Murat ova has never been given he r due in th e Soviet and post-So viet Russia. In the "Long Good Bye" she depicts a seemingly banal story of a jealous and possess ive m other (brilli antly acted by Zinaida Shark o) and her poor aloof and lonely son (th e onl y cinematic role by t he talented O. V ladimirsky). The s tory - which is nothing extraordinary in i tself - gr ows int o the wond erful an d frightening an alysis o f aliena tion between genders and generatio ns on the background of the even more fr ighteningly bleak an d dehumanized Soviet reality.Kira Murat ova s hows the tiny details of everyday Soviet life,and, a gain , ba nal as they are ,th ey are a hair-raising horror.The dialogue is deliberately laconic and void of any se nse, showin g the ever-growing people's inabili ty to communicate and under stand each other.T he sound tr ack ( by another under-estimate d talent, Oleg Karavaichuk)adds to the a tmosphere of hopeless and meaning less existence.Of course,Sasha (the name of the pr otagonist),w ill leave his despoti c ( but l oving!) mother soo ner or later, but where for?
