T hey do not sho w war in this film, they show people and their dreams and ho pes ruined b y the war. It is not just another &quo t;war film& quot;, b ut it rises to th e level of a true Tragedy. Not a prop agandis t or a sob story. Many critics co mpare this film to another fa mous R ussian war drama, The Cranes Are Flying. I st ill think that The House I Live in is better, t hough, if you 've seen The Crane s and liked it, most probably you'll love this one e ither. Both films were shot in 1957 and treat the war theme from the s imilar humane per spective. I wouldn& #39;t cut a single shot from the film, all of t hem ar e just i n place. I do not know if it can be found outside Russia, if yes, don't miss it. Many cri tics point ed out resemblances between Dom, V Kotorom Ya Zh ivu (The House I Live In) and the better -known So viet film The Cran es are Flyin g. Set in t he years prior to and during WWII, the st ory c enter s on the various residents of a co-op house. Though th e directors never show th e war itse lf, its tragic i mpact is felt through out the film . And despite the potentia l for Soviet pro paganda, w hat sticks in the m ind is the univer sality of the experiences endured b y the leading characters. Dom, V Kotorom Ya Zhivu was one of Rus sian 's entries in the 1958 Brussels Film Festival.
