The main char acter is Dr. Max Holst, a successful neurosurgeon. One day an i ntense little man nam ed Steinmetz shows up, who has the real ability to cr eate o bjects out of thin air, using o nly his min d. As no one believes him at f irst, he is held at a ward for mental patients, but manifests the key to his do or and es capes. As he has a speci al interest in Dr. Holst, Steinmetz subsequently i nvites Holst to his large mansion, w hich is full of e xpensive painting s and scu lptures, and prove s to him that he can in fact materialise objects. Steinmetz’s abilities are evolving by leaps and bounds , and i s progressin g from being able to create ob jects only t o being abl e to crea te liv ing things. His ult imate ambi tion is to b e able to create a human being . He tells Dr. Holst that if he will only perform a certain brain operation on him, Steinmet z will become able to attai n his goal. He’s got all the nece ssary equip ment set u p in his b asement. Dr. Holst, however, is too spooked by th e whole thing to agree to this mad schem e, and refuses. S teinmetz then sets a bout mani pulating Holst’s life, to pressure him into perform ing the operation. By then Steinmetz has becom e able to create a temporary human being, and in the hope that he can perhaps make his own creatio n perform the operatio n, he man ifes ts a dop pelganger of Dr. Holst. This double proceeds to take over D r. Holst’s life, creatin g chaos for him professiona lly and person ally. And then Dr. Holst starts fighting b ack.
