New York priv ate de tective Duncan "Mac" MacLain is blind but has keenly developed all his other senses. He pursues his work assisted by his faithful g uide dog F riday, his butler, Alist air, and his assist ant, Marty. R etired actress Norma Lawry, a n ol d friend, comes to Mac seeking advic e. Her head strong 17 -year-old step-daughter Barbar a, hers elf a promising actress , is enamored with her leading man in a small thea ter production, the much older Lot hario Paul Gerente. Paul, who had once been Norma';s lover, has convinced Barbar a that Norm a actually wants Paul for herse lf and has only marrie d her father Stephen for his mo ney. At Mac 's urging, Norma tried to reason with Paul, but he insists that he love s Barbara and laughs her off. Ba rbara is equally disdainful of h er an d agrees to meet Pa ul for dinner that n ight at his apartment.< br/> Norma';s husban d Stephen Lawry is a scientist l eaving that night on a trip to test a secret i nvention on whic h he has been working for the gover nment an d the war effor t. Worried about Barbara, she uses a pret ext no t to acco mpany Ste phen and g oes to the apartmen t. When Barbara arriv es, she finds Paul9;s dea d body and thinks that Norma has killed h im, e ven though N orma insist s that he was dea d when she arrived. Barbara thr eatens to call the police un less she leaves Stephen. Fearing th at a scandal will hurt him, Norma agree s. Norma then turns to M ac, who goes to Pau l's apartment with Friday and Marty, only to fi nd the body and the ru g und er it missing. A man ar rives to replace th e rug and Ma c hides in a closet, overhearing a telepho ne call to Norma's number fr om "Gabriel&qu ot; to & quot; Vera.&quo t; Mac accidentally g ives himself away, but with Friday';s help overpowers Gabriel, who refuse s to talk. Mac h as Ma rty hide him to keep him under wraps. Norma retur ns to her country home unexpectedly , which d isco urages an espionage ring that includes her butler, Ha nsen, from breaking into Stephen's safe and stealing his plans. They have k illed Gerente, who wa s also an agent, and h idden the body. M ac arrives wit h Friday at Norma's house an d pretends t o be her curmudgeonly &qu ot;Uncle Mac " ; who has come for a visit. His blindne ss lulls any suspici ons Hansen mig ht have ab out him. Shortly thereafter, Barbara com es ho me fr om an "eme rgency rehearsal", called to get h er out of t he house by her director, Cheli Scott, who inveigle s an in vitation to s pend th e night at th e La wry home. Unknown to Barbara and Norma, Cheli i s th e ringle ader of the spies. Cheli ordered Paul k illed because his affection for Barbara w as beginn ing to limit his effectiveness, and she immediate ly suspects Mac is n ot what he seems. Gab riel';s wife Ver a, the Lawrys' maid, is als o a part of the plot. When Gabriel does not return home, Vera becomes hys terical with worry. Mac secretly asks V era to meet him in the greenhouse, using her worry a bout Gabriel as a lure. She is observed by the othe rs, howe ver, and is killed b y Hansen be fore she can reach Mac. The spies c ut the house's telephone wires so that Mac and Norma canno t call the police, and Che li has Mac locked up unde r gu ard. Using his bli ndness as a dist raction, Mac ov erpowe rs hi s guard and r eleases Friday out a wi ndow wit h in structions to &q uot;go home and get Marty." ; Ste phen arriv es home and Cheli threatens his family if he do es n ot give her the final step in creating his i nvention, which wa s not in the safe. Barbara finally realizes how muc h Norma a ctual ly cares fo r her. Mac tries to st all for time, but is lock ed in the ce llar. When Hansen goes to kill him, Mac has broken the l ight bulb and his advantage of t otal darkne ss helps him overcom e the spy. Mar ty and Friday return with the police. When Fr iday is spotted by a lookout, M ac overpow ers him and is saved from being shot by another lookout by Friday.
