Short film Empire is based on a rad io drama Sorry, Wrong Numbe r by the American writer Lucille Fletch er. Actu ally, Sokurov draws on a single theme formi ng the backgrou nd for t he story of the thrille r — the woman's illness… The h eroine is bed–ridden and her only mean s of commun ication with the o utside world is her telephone — until a killer interrupts the c onversatio n… Sokurov r emoves all the dialogues, leaving us alon e with the h eroine — “a living skel eton” amon g the refined, wit h a tou ch of Moder n–styl e, fu rnishings — who is l istening to a radio bro adcasting of Tra viata, with its pleas f or mercy and love. An elegant coff in–home is the spatial centre and symbolizati on of th e entire fi lm. And insi de the coffin we certainly see the a ctress — the famous Russian baller ina A lla Osipenko who plays not only the heroin e but a lso her own self. This m etaphor ic ci nema–i mage bea rs an allusion t o the great “handica pped” Sarah Bernhardt who was r eporte d to sleep in a coffin, as well as to the entir e complex of aesthetised Decade nce, c onvert ing an apology of Deat h into a lifestyle. Here i s the key to the code of the title. Empi re i s a style that attempt ed to reanimate the dead ancien t harmony. The heroine of Sokurov's film communicates with her phone as the only partner, and sort of interferes with t he beyond, attracting this air — intangible yet saturated with dang er. It is from the radio air that she accumulates both pleasure and tranquillity — the aria of dying yet beloved Vio letta, w hile the k iller 's silhouette materializes from the ph one air. A ch amber pot, overt urned and spilt by the killer in haste, remains the only evidence of human activities in t his bou doir of Death. Sokurov9;s metaphor, clad in naturalistic de tails, pro duces the effec t of iro nic di sclosure: “a wet spot” is left after a symbol. The film was shot as a study work of a VGIK student S.Sidorov. At that time Sok urov did not have a chance to launch a project of h is own, therefore he used this poss ibilit y to wo rk.
