Siskel and Ebert once ra n a s pecial show entitled "Movies I& #39;m Em barrassed t o Admit I Liked. " I suppose that if I comp osed suc h a list of guilty pleas ures, this one wo uld be one of them . . . but u pon refl ection, i t's really a lot better than that. Fifteen ye ar-old science prodigy Mi tch (Gabe Jarret) is re cruited by ambitious colle ge professor William At herton (in yet another o f his patented roles as a loat hsome c haracter) to work on the professor's prize la ser p rojec t, not know ing that the pro f is really developing a governme nt weapon. Along t he way, Mitch is befriended by Chris (Val Kilmer), another prodigy a few years his senior who teaches the Mit ch how to loosen up. This could have degenera ted in to nothing more tha n just another teen revenge comedy, but there's so m uch more: the dial ogue is laced w ith sh arp wit ; there are some lovely scenes th at have nothing to do with t he story yet are care fully set up, a lmost as blackout s (e .g., M itch goe s to a lect ure at which a few students hav e left tape recorder s inst ead of a ttending; later, at a nother lecture there are more tape recorders than students; and, in a final sc ene, one large tape r ecorder gives the lectu re to a r oom pop ulated by nothing bu t other small recorders!); and thr ow-away sce nes that make you want to stop and back up the tape (e.g., Chris off-handedly cutting a slice off a bar of solid nitrogen to make a slug for t he c offee machine). I t's also one of the fe w mo vies to bo ast the presence of the memorable Michelle Meyerink -- as Jor dan, the "gi rl-nerd" who mad e being sm art and female something to be em ulated. And there&# 39;s Tear s fo r Fears great song, &qu ot;Everybody Wants to Rule the Wo rld" prov iding the perfect coda as the closing credits begin to ro ll . . . .
