Formerly, the usual UK title was T HE BOGEY MA N AND THE FREN CH M URDER S. There ' ;s also a Greek video wi th the sleev e title, CALL GIRLS FOR INSPECTOR BOGART . The insp ector is not named B ogart, nor does he get a ny call girls, but who cares? It's a title that sells. There's a kille r in Paris, a suicide from the Eiffe l Tower, a brothel as the main setting, insane professors, an eye-b all thief, an inspector who look s like H umphrey Bogart (for no apparent reason) , a truly creepy Anita Ek berg, an d an impre ssive line-up o f Euro- stars. How Dick Randall assem bled this cast is beyond me, but he did i t. Besides Anita Ekbe rg, the re' ;s Ros alba Neri (w ho even sings a song in a nightclub), Barbar a Bou chet, Evelyn K raft, Howard Vernon, and R obert Sacchi as ins pector Pontaine or Humphrey Bogart. The title is pretty ac curate. The murders take place du ring, before or after sex in a brothel in P aris. In between, the Bogey- man s noops around trying to track down t he killer, b ut he is n ot too b right. Y ou'll probably have f igure d it out long b efore he does. The film& #39;s produ cer was American Dick Randall who took residence in Rome in t he '60s but basically was wherever the deals wh ere made, which meant R ome in the & #39;60s, Bangkok and Hong Kong in the ' ;70s and London in the '80s. Whilst residing in Italy, he p ayed close attention and decid ed to take a shot a t the giallo as well, and pro duced this piece of cinematic soufflé. It 9;s a perfect example of totall y round the bend Euro-tosh, with a rathe r tame execution actua lly. The direction is no t wild ly imaginati ve, a workman' s job at best, so don't expect outrageous Italian craftsmans hip an d style here, but some spicin g-up in the edit ing by Bruno Mattei. The special effects were done by future Oscar-winner C arlo Rambaldi of ET fame. I gues s he l earned a lot since thi s one. Of course, the presence of Robert Sacchi , among some other ingredients (m ostly the c ast) give this film a cert ain weird identity of its own. All toget her, it's p retty mu ch a poor man's interpretat ion of an Italian Gi allo. The version o n Mondo Ma cabro9;s DVD never exis ted in this form. From various copie s, they assembl ed the longest version they could possibly paste together.
