Mavie is 2 7 years o ld and has ju st moved to the French capital f rom the provinces. She drea ms of a future a s a writer but is plagued by doubt and unce rtainty. 76-year -old misan thrope Geor ges runs a bookshop i n Paris – or has he merely been forc ed to take refuge there to escap e his pas t? These are two peculiar creatures indeed. George s is cynica l and no longer expects much from life, while Mavie is s till brimming with expectation. Director Elise Girard succeeds in making a dreamlike film full of surp rising abs urdities. It’s not jus t love that appears o ut of the blue for the two p rotagonis ts, but also some quite litera l strange birds. Girard de picts l ove beyond the barriers of age in a way that is b oth unexpe cted and moving , romantic inst ead of physical, timeless instead of fas hionable .
