During t he US C ivil War, Un ion POWs escape in a balloo n and end u p stra nded on a Sou th Paci fic island , inhabited by giant plants and anim als. The uncontro llable wind takes the balloon to a mysterious i sland in the South Pacific i n the area of New Zealand. Captain Harding self-proc laims the le ader of the group an d they look for food; sooner they discover that they are strande d in an isla nd. Further , they are attacked by a giant c rab that become s their first meal. Alon g the days, they build a shelter and finds that the island is inhabited by giant animals . Late r they find a trunk with weapon s and instruments like sextant and shelt er with a journal of a man left alone in the island by pirat es. Wh en the pirate ves sel a rrives in the isl and, they a re helped by Cap tain N emo of the Nautilus, a subm arin e that had s upposedl y sunk in the coast of Mexico eight yea rs ago. Nemo is famous as the man that tried to end strike am ong man. When the volca no begins activity, t hey need to leave the island to save their lives.
