It is more memorable t han Julien Duvivier' s earlier silent version of 1925 , also named Po il de Carotte. The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Ro bert Lynen , who was alleged to h ave b een discovered whilst walkin g down the Champs -Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally c aptivating and the film made him an insta nt star, launching what looked like becoming a very pro mising film career – until h e was shot dead whilst fighting again st the Germans in 1944. Ha rry Baur, a legendar y stage an d fil m actor (who also d ied during World W ar II, alle gedly at the hands of the Gestap o), also tur ns in a typicall y fine per formanc e.
